I noticed the tick aswell!

I test drove a MT 13' GT and noticed the tick w/10k, I ended up buying a 12' MT with 38k and has a small tick back passenger side while warming up

I got the tick when I only had about 1,500 miles on my car, even before the first oil change. Had it looked at two different dealers and they didn't do anything, said it was "normal." I did the first oil change at Ford and the tick came back louder before quieting down, I did the second oil change using Mobil 1 synthetic and the same thing.

I usually hear the tick intermittently at idle, more with the AC on, and also between 1.5-2K rpms when accelerating.

The tick isn't anything to worry about. There are many with and without it. You can beat these like a red headed step child.....even with the tick. There are so many moving parts in these engines it's just plain common.

Update: (Fair warning... This post may be long, unorganized and cover multiple topics). So I purchased my vehicle new from a Dealer in my Auto Group out of Omaha. It is about an hour from my house but Employee price is for sure worth the extra distance. There is a Dealer about 3 blocks from where I work and they have done all the repairs on my vehicle until recently. I actually went to tech school with the advisor at this Dealer and came to know and trust the tech who worked on my vehicle. My car had a oil leak from the timing cover which I noticed at about 1000 miles or so. It was fixed (Took 2 attempts) but that is also about when I started to notice the tick on light accel when warm. After my local dealer looked at it a few times it got to a point where I realized they could not or would not fix it. Not really sure which. I mentioned the TSB for the AC Belt tensioner which a quick Google search will show cured multiple peoples vehicles. But since that TSB does not apply to my model year the local Dealer refused to do it. They said I could pay for it and they would do it. But that Ford would not pay them to do it under Warranty. I ended up contacting the Ford customer services. They told me that all I can do is go to my next nearest Dealer. So now I am back to working with my Selling Dealer. The Service Manager has been WONDERFUL to deal with. He fully understands my crazy OCD with my vehicle and has gone out of his way to do whatever he can to correct my cars issue. Because of the distance I had to travel and the time involved they let me removed the AC Stretchy Belt myself. I was really excited at first because I really thought removing the belt had cured my noise. However after about 30 minutes I driving I did notice the noise again. It was however quieter and less frequent. I drove up to Omaha to have them put the AC Belt TSB parts on (Which they agreed to do without hesitation) Hoping that whatever noise was left might go away once the TSB was performed. Once I reached the Dealer they discovered they did not order the TSB parts for me. I almost had to laugh. I have worked in a Dealer for almost 10 years and would be lying if I said it never happened where I work. They were very apologetic (I think they expected me to fly off the handle) and they gave me a big discount on my oil change and installed the Ford Racing Track Cal tune for free. (To clarify I purchased the tuner which I could have easily installed but wanted no warranty issues) So I took the car home with no AC. No big deal I rarely use it anyway. Before I had time to get the car back to Omaha one of the techs I work with had me put the vehicle up on our Alignment Rack and drive the vehicle back and forth with him underneath it. With a stethoscope he really thought the noise was coming from the bell housing area. I gave this info to the Dealer in Omaha. On my second trip they installed the AC TSB parts and low and behold still had the noise. No real surprise there unfortunately. So they had me drive the car back and forth on their Alignment rack with their tech underneath. He also agreed the bell housing area produced the most noise. I left the vehicle with them. They gave me a new Eco Boost to drive (Which I was thoroughly unimpressed with but will not go into now because this post is a mile long already). They told me once they had the transmission out that they thought the clutch was the culprit. One of the springs was loose in its cage on the clutch disc. (I saw the clutch myself tonight and it was legitimately loose). The clutch now must be purchased as a kit by Ford with a new part number and also requires fly wheel replacement due to the updated clutch parts. That made me think that maybe we finally had the noise fixed. I figured if Ford updated the parts there had to be a good reason. So I was supposed to pick the vehicle up yesterday evening but it was raining. The Service Manager knowing how crazy I am about my car told the tech to keep my vehicle inside. He did not even have him test drive it until this morning once the streets dried even though it was finished yesterday evening. They also kept it inside all day in a stall they would not be using. Again the Service Manager was AWESOME! So I picked the vehicle up after work tonight. Drove it home. The clutch feels noticeably different. Not wrong, not bad, just different. I drove the hour home on the interstate excited that the car was likely fixed. Unfortunately when I got back into town and stop and go traffic... The noise is still there. So now I do not know what to do. I will contact the Service Manager tomorrow. But I am truly stumped about what else to do. Any input or ideas are welcome. Thanks

Truthfully no I have not. There are a million oil threads out there. And hopefully this one does not turn into that. But I have read previously that folks are running all different brands of oil and getting the noise. Also different weights. Standard 5w20 and Track Pack 5w50. I am the latter.

I did my first oil change with Motorcraft, and my 2nd with Mobil 1, both of them still had the tick afterwards. All I can say is the tick is more frequent after a fresh oil change, then slows down after a few hundred miles.

Oil change does not really change my noise. Although I do not go far between oil changes. Just do it once a season.

Can you describe your noise more? When it happened and so on?

I'd like to share my thoughts on this. I am no mechanic by any means, but I came to conclude that our cars are very sensitive to kind of oil used, and this ticking issue we're experiencing is the result from it.

Why should we even have the noise in the first place is a BIG mystery, I have never ever encountered such an issue NOT from as simple as basic car maintenance like an oil change, until I own the Mustang that is.

1st Oil Change @ 6K-ish:
I asked Ford dealership specifically for a 'FULL SYNTHETIC' (just because).
So this was Motorcraft 5W20 Full-Syn.
No tick, I was not aware of the issue at this point.

2nd Oil Change @ 12K-ish:
Did the same at Ford Dealership.
I got the tick immediately.
Noise ultimately did go away.

3rd Oil Change:
Ford Dealership.
Asked for Motorcraft 5W50 Full-Syn (not a track-pack car).
Noise came back and it was LOUDER.

4th Oil Change:
Dealership does not have a CLUE what's causing it or what it is.
Went to Walmart and bought MOBIL1 5W30(!) Full-Syn 'EXTENDED MILES'.
I asked Ford Dealership to put this instead.
Noise has disappeared(!).

The Engine sounded/felt different after 4th Oil Change. It was Smoother. I've never felt this way on previous three occasions. The noise was still there but it was quickly fading away after some miles. Now I do not hear it anymore.

The tick sound comes and goes on my car. It seems like it goes away a bit when I fill oil to the top mark on the dipstick. My car uses a little oil between changes. When the oil level drops to the middle mark on the dipstick, the sound gets louder. Sounds crazy because that amount of oil should not make a difference.

Glassback I'm by no means an expert but it sure sounds like something in the valve train. If it was a clutch deal it seems like you would notice a change in the sound when the clutch is applied. As you say it's only under acceleration and to me that sounds like a valve train deal. Maybe a cam follower or timing chain guide? I mean seriously, look at all the stuff in this photo that could potentially make a clicking sound lol.

I wouldn't be surprised if they know what is causing the tick and either it's too costly to cover it under warranty and they know it won't be a serious issue until after your warranty runs out or they actually have no idea at all what's causing it and are just as confused as the rest of us.

I use this oil, except in 5W20, and still have the tick. I really don't think different oil will solve the problem.

HizliBullet, have you had the oil changed since the shortblock has been replaced?

Maybe not, maybe yes. It was a 'yes' in my case. Not sure if this particular oil is just masking the noise or whatnot, but I'm happy that my ticking is gone, for now anyways.

Is your next oil change due soon? If so, I wouldn't hesitate to give another try for different oil. You already have the tick, what have you got to loose. Btw, what you're using and what I used is DIFFERENT (Yes, they are the same Mobil1 brand). Mobil1 EXTENDED PERFORMANCE 5W30.

I will note this again & again. Our cars are VERY SENSITIVE. Also, I did NOT pick up 'extended performance' crapp so I can have longer intervals. I bought these because the 'regular' ones were out of stock at walmart LOL! As for 5W30 viscosity, yes I chose them purposely over 5W20 (or 5W50). It seems my car likes them so far.

Amsoil 5w-20 has mostly quieted my tick. It will come back occasionally but I run the car hard and it goes away.

Just did my oil change with Mobil 1 5w50 today, the tick is back with a vengeance! Hopefully it will quiet down again after a few hundred miles.

I switched to Ford's recommended synthetic blend for two oil changes now. After the first change, the tick returned. After the second, it has not. I will ad that between those two oil changes I added a supercharger. The tune for it upped the idle about 200 RPM. The car now had 401xx miles on it.
