How loud it too loud
Just had a cat-back exhaust done on my 14 stock mustang gt including x-pipe and outlaw mufflers, on my drive home the exhaust makes the radio obsolete so i regret it on that front being a convertible has anyone else made the switch to a cat-back exhaust and outlaw series mufflers? and a little help would be if anyone knows if the american thunder axle back will fit in place of the outlaw series i am thinking i might have hit the 120Db rating while driving and if anyone says there is no drone slap'em i will say the drone is bad i have the automatic and at 1500rpm it's ok but bad....people on cell phones hate me driving by them even with there windows up they are still yelling at me

I had a Roush on my F150 when I bought it I just nicknamed it DroneMaster since it was too Loud and had could not talk in the truck drone from 1700-2100 RPM. To me anything louder than a Touring Muffler is too loud for a vert but I am both Old and Deaf and have had straight piped Caterpillar and Cummins diesels in my ears for years.

yeah i was comparing sound clips on the internet and the sound clips are not real life they should not even include them, to me the outlaw and american thunder cat-back kits sounded similar but the parts store said they had the outlaw in stock and 2 weeks out for the american thunder kit and for 10 dollars in price difference i opted for the one in stock and had them install it what a mistake that was... the guy who installed it couldn't even line up the tail pipes properly and now i have to take it in and have them adjusted properly, guy said he spent 45 minutes on it but he had the car for 1.5hrs and when i confronted him about it he just said it was a really tight fit and it is what it is, needless to say i won't be back there but it looks like i backed into something and bent the muffler maybe i'll try my hand at it when i get a dry day so now i need a Db meter to see if i am in city limits i heard the cops where i live are cracking down on loud cars

Hi,
I'm not an expert on exhaust setups but would like to share opinions. That being said...
FLOWMASTER OUTLAW CAT-BACK EXHAUST SYSTEM
The straight-through design mufflers + straight (no resonators) OTA pipes + X-pipe. Yep, these are loud. But, I'm sure what's bothering you more is the cabin drone.
A general consensus on Flowmaster brand is the drone or at least that's what I remember reading. The truth I hear is, ALL aftermarket exhausts drone in some degree and simply a matter of how much noticeable. I doubt replacing to Flowmaster American Thunder Axle-Back would do any good with your (cat-back) setup. To reduce drone--> Resonator(s).
I auditioned both of the Outlaw AB & CB clips with my earphones on from AM website. Wow, these are some beast-roaring exhausts. Deep and Meaty. I'd say almost identical tone but the 'axle-back only' setup sounds more controlled.
Bent the mufflers?? That's not good... I believe aligning the tail pipes or axle-back tips has something to do with the fitment of OTA pipes. I've seen other brands difficult times fitting them correctly. I've had my resonators cut out and axle-backs won't line up evenly.
If you absolutely prefer Flowmaster's sound, then how about try axle-back only set up? This means putting back stock H-pipe and stock OTA pipes (with resonators). Otherwise, you might want to consider other brands such as CORSA.

thanks for replies but it was quite a difference from stock and outlaw....stock small little growl upon startup, and now its like a lion shakes the whole darn house.... family in basement suite were away this weekend wait till i fire it up when they get back... i liked the flowmaster sound on my sn95 did the cat-back on it but this is way louder then the american thunder setup i had on the 98...i guess i have to live with it was not cheap and didn't keep stock exhaust as i wasn't putting it on my leather seats as i don't have fold down seats in the convertible guess i am glad i didn't do the cat-delete or high flow cats and programmer because that would definitely open it up more than i did... guess i am just cautious about how loud is too loud,as they are ticketing harley's for after market exhaust and this falls into the harley range now....i guess i need to start acting my age of 49 and maybe just maybe my loud pipes will save lives

So the stock parts are gone. No worries. I see couple of options.
1. Run the current setup as long as you can. Enjoy the loudness.
2. If becomes too much, look into 'aftermarket resonators'.
- Here are some interesting reads.
Roush ab too quiet w/stock resonators and too loud w/out
replacing resonators with bullet mufflers?
Exhaust Opinion: Resonator replacements w/ bullet muffler
They're talking about using something like these:
Dynomax Race Bullet Muffler In/Out: 3"
Check the reviews, threads. I saw them mention Flowmasters.
I myself actually looked into doing this when my exhaust felt too much, although I ended up putting back the stock resonators.

How was it tested & by who ?
If a sound level meter was used, did it have a current calibration sticker ?
Was it on or off axis, & how far from the car ?

in total the phone was on the ground approx 6 feet back center of car insanely loud even my brother in law works at a parts store saw this and went WOW could not believe the numbers said flowmaster said the only way to quiet it down was to put resonators on it, i think maybe look for stock mufflers or rousch mufflers and swap them out as long as they didn't weld them
