I even drove my cars in the snow and ice. It was a good feeling to roll up to work in flagstaff with three feet of snow on the ground and only seeing 4x4's in the parking lot.

2 weeks ago I bought my Mustang and sold my Honda Fit to a friend. I knew that my mpg would drop drastically from the 32 mpg Honda average, yet was hoping for at least 20 with the Ford. For the first 3 fill ups, the Mustang averaged 20.9, 17.0, and 21.6. There was more city with the 17.0 reading, so 20.0 seems attainable for the way I drive. I've always kept track of my mileage on an Excel spreadsheet for all my cars, and will be interested to see the data that the Mustang produces as time goes by.

Food for thought: If you had a 412 h.p. car back in the late '60s that would do a 1/4 mile in the low 13s, you'd be lucky to get 10 mpg. 20 mpg is really not bad considering the level of performance that our cars have.

OP,
1. don't redline during shifts, keep between 2-3500 rpm,

2. don't downshift everytime you need to pass, 5.0 has great torque for passing

3. Don't brake hard coming to a red light, let it engine brake (even in 4th gear engine braking is efficient)

4. Don't carry unnecessary weight in the trunk (in summer)

5. Shift smoothly (not a manual expert but I try to sooner and smoother)

A full tank lasted me a 12 days purely city driving

Those are just my tips, I'm also learning how to smooth shift without jerking (premature clutch releasing)

2 words - skip shift.

The car, stock can already help you maximize mileage return. Just try to resist the urge to shift from 1st to 2nd. I did for a little bit and I saw my MPG jump a lot.

Now i'm back to regular 1-2-3 shifts, the mileage suffered just as i expected.
