Has anyone had aluminum hood bubbles/chiping/rot covered by Ford after waranty?
Has anyone had aluminum hood bubbles/chiping/rot covered by Ford after waranty?
My 2011 has 18,400 miles on it...the tiny underhood blister is now ~1cm in diameter and I'm worried about what's coming.
The car has always been stored indoors (out of the sunlight), has never seen road salt, seldom sees rain, I always open the hood after shutting it off to minimize heat soak into underhood components and the hood iself (unless I'm in a public parking lot, of course). I've always taken the car to touchless car washes, etc.
Honestly, I'm not sure what I could have done to prevent this...it's pretty clear that this is a QC issue...but because my car is 2011 (bought in August 2010), I'm outside of the bumper to bumper coverage.
Has Ford ever stepped up on this issue for folks who are outside of the warranty range? I sent a note to Deysha yesterday morning but no response yet...
Thanks for any insight.

Mike, from what I have read here, and on the F-150 forum Ford has stepped up on occasions when the warranty had expired really close to the time the problem happened. But, haven't read anything about paint problems after a year. If they don't (but hope they do for you) it shouldn't be an expensive fix. Good luck.
I think its still a quality problem- look at these brand new 2014s at the auto show:
https://themustangsource.com/f739/bu...3/#post6766138 scroll down to post 122
farther up that thread were pics from the 2013 show-[edit- heres the 13 pics: https://themustangsource.com/f739/bu...5/#post6561296 scroll down to post 50 ] the front lips were a little better this year, but the bubbling hoods continue... most aluminum hoods ive looked at had the little tiny bubbles like on the blue one pictured- all three of ours (06/07/09) included. the problem was there when new.
my 06 blew up from the tiny bubbles to inches of underhood and a topside bubble over a 2 month span- once it starts to spread, it goes quick.
my wifes 07 was fine when put in winter storage, it started to bloom over winter in the dry garage... my (undriven/4 mile) 09 had them the day it came home, they havent changed yet, but the cars been sitting in undercover- only been washed a couple times...
those that think their hoods are fine, most of the time havent looked close enough at the underside hem... almost all have at least a little bit, thats where it will start- whether today or a few years down the road. love the cars- wish they'd get a handle on their aluminum panel prep/paint...
I put a fang shaker hood on my 06, as it was too far gone to mess with... gonna try to grind/acid etch/ seam seal the 07 and 09s and see if they can be preserved, as its not onto the top panel yet. hoping a acid etch will neutralize it, then masking the topside, pour paint into the underside with the front tipped down to reseal the inner part, then goonna *try* clear 'automotive goop' on the underside edge- like that glue, used it on rc airplane/heli canopies, only bad thing is it 'strings' horribly... gotta run one solid bead without lifting as lifting always strings... it has a lot of toluene, think it will bite well into the epoxyprime/paint and dries kinda rubbery to allow a little movement without cracking... might just make a mess, time will tell... my luck I'll drop the hood or ding it up handling it- one thing nice about the factory hoods, they are ultra lightweight compared to fiberglass
good luck trying to get Ford to help- if you have a good dealer relationship have heard of quite a few folks getting costs split, but it all depends...
I think most repaints are guaranteed 2 yrs, find out ahead of time if it starts to bubble again if it will be covered, or not until the paint blows off. in my thinking if the factory cant make it last on brand new/dipped panels, I kinda doubt its fair to expect more on a corrosion repair at a bodyshop, know what I mean

Deysha
honestly, I feel bad for any shop that repairs these- odds are high for eating returns- bet most of them know it now too... wonder if Ford pays warranty/tsb repairs and the dealer bodyshop has to cover the repair for 2 years, how this can be fair... the problem is prep caused inaccessible corrosion between panels, yet if Ford tells them how to fix it and it fails in a year, does the dealer eat the repaint?
again, the 15 f150 worries me...Ford hasnt fixed the hood issues yet, and are now building a aluminum body...
I have the same issue. I bought my 2011 Mustang GT/CS from Ted Britt Ford in Chantilly VA in January 2013. It had 21k miles and it was a certified used car. This is my 5th mustang, the previous two were a 1994 GT bought new and a 2006 GT bought as a 1yr old used.
I noticed a corrosion bubble on the front edge of my 2006 and traded it in for the 2011. Then last winter I noticed one on my 2011. The car had 38000 miles and it was out of the bumper to bumper coverage. The dealership took pictures and sent it off to Ford. The claim was rejected. I spent two hours making calls to Ford customer service and got no where. The corrosion has gotten worse and I am now considering getting an aftermarket hood but the entire experience had really soured me on Ford. I have been a devout Ford customer for over twenty years and I currently have a 2011 Explorer (bought new) and my 2011 Mustang in my garage.
The Mustang has always been garaged and babied and it sickens me that Ford has a known issue but they refuse to stand behind their product, especially since I was a mere 2,000 miles out of warranty.

Sorry to hear that and its BS that Ford won't honor your work. Just think of all those that will be buying the new all aluminum Ford trucks.

Rant over....

Not looking forward to this if my car ever develops it. When I go to pick it up, I'll be taking extra pictures of the hood and trunk edges. I plan to change the hood down the road anyways, but still. It's pretty disappointing to see how Ford has handled (or not) this problem, which I remember seeing all the way back in 2005.
