Grinding feeling from brake pedal

I was just coming home from picking up some dinner, and coming up to a traffic light, when someone swerved from the right lane into the left lane right in front of me so they could be first at the light. I slam on the brakes, and come to a stop in time, however there was a grinding feeling/noise from the brake pedal.

I've done emergency stops before, and never heard / felt the sensation. It's never done it before, and it didn't do it any more on the rest of the few miles home. Is that normal? Maybe I'm just being paranoid, because I used to own a Merc Mountaineer that had tons of brake isues.

How many miles on your car? Being a 2012, there's no way you've worn the brakes down yet. Do you have slotted/dimpled/cross drilled rotors? It's normal for cross drilled rotors to have a little grind to them when you slam on the brakes and it will occur right as you're coming to a stop. I never felt that with the stock rotors.

That is your abs module kicking the brake pedal back at you. Normal operation don't worry about it.. try it again and you will feel the tires start to slip and then the pedal starts to fight back.

Its a 2012 with about 2k miles, so no way the brakes are gone. They are the standard OEM rotors. But it's like you describe, the grinding was right as it was coming to a stop.

TBone, if it is the ABS, I guess it just feels a lot different than my truck. I'm coming off a 2010 F150, which had a very distinct feeling when the ABS kicked in, and this is my first car in years, so I guess its just a different feeling than I'm used to.

Like I said, it's probably me just being paranoid. Before the F150 I had a Merc, where the master cylinder went bad, and caused the front, passenger caliper to squeeze closed, which essentially melted the caliper/pads to the rotor, and the only warning sign was a slight grinding noise... lol

Lol. Well if you can test it yourself if you would like. Make a hard stop and note how it feels. Then go under the hood and pull the abs fuse. Perform the stop again and see if its any different. Pretty easy to do and should answer your question

I must add this:

My last car was a 07 Chrysler made car. When the abs kicked in, the brake pedal would just vibrate.

When the abs kicks in on my Mustang, the pedal goes almost to the floor and you hear a grinding sound and also what sounds like metal clanking. It feels like the brake pads are going to come out of the calipers.

This is all normal.

Good call on the ABS Bone. That's most likely it. But like Deysha mentioned, if you're uneasy about it, just let the dealer take a quick look at it.

I would definitely do another hard stop and try to duplicate it to see what's up. I'm like you, paranoid about all sounds.
