Fuel Injector Cleaner

Just want o pass along a lessons learned for anyone who hasn;t put fuel injector cleaner in their car. Learned this the hard way. With the capless fuel door the little flapper valve is further down in the line to the tank. I went to put some injector cleaner in my tank with the fill up and due to the neck on the bottle being short and not moving said flapper valve it went on the ground via the overflow. So make sure you are opening that valve and the neck of the bottle is long or you use a funnel.

Really should always use a funnel on any car when putting additives in them, lots of them can be very damaging to paint and plastic and rubber.

Way back in the early 80's when I was the assistant manager at a speed shop near Dallas I had a customer with a early 70's vette who cam in and bought a can of Moroso octane booster. I offered to loan him a funnel to put it in his car but he turned me down. I watched him go out and take the top off the can and open the flap above the fuel filler, which on those years of vettes are in the middle of the big flat deck behind the rear window, and then watched as he started to tip the can to pour the booster in. I then watched as the booster spilled out all over the deck and down the side of the vette. Seconds later the paint started to wrinkle up and run off the car along with the octane booster. So, one $3000 custom paint job shot to hell because he didn't think he would need a funnel to put the stuff in.

Tough lesson to learn...

Thought you're suppose to use the supplied funnel any time you need to add anything to the tank with the Capless filler system....(fuel line antifreeze, gas from a canister etc)

Supplied funnel? My new Mustang comes with a funnel? If true, that's hilarious.

Not trying to be a jerk or start any hate threads, but I was taught not to use injector cleaner.

There is a filter (mesh screen) inside the injector. When you put the cleaner through it, it breaks up the deposits, so that they will fit through the mesh. Enough large particles like that score the flowpath and create "ruts" in the nozzle end. Plain english - injector doesn't spray correctly.

They're designed for over 100k miles. Put six digits on your car, and plug for a new set IMHO. I've got 177k on my Slocus and havent touched mine yet.

As always - just trying to help.

Hmmm I didnt know that.
Interesting as I was under the assumption that it couldnt hurt your car but actually make it cleaner and better.

Thanks for the info

Seems like one of the tuner guys said they've seen a 'film' inside the 3V engine from additives and discouraged their use.

I know my old F150 gets running rough every so often. A bottle of Gumout and run the engine hard a few times, and its back to running great and idling smooth. But its an old carb engine so...

Most of the name brand fuels, chevron, shell, exxon, etc come with fuel system cleaners as part of the fuel blends. Plus, if you have a poor performing injector due to a build up of crud in it then running a can of injector cleaner through it would seem to me to be better than not doing it. And if you were to take the injectors out and have a injector shop clean and flow them, they are going to run a flushing agent through them which would seem to me to be about the same as a tank additive being run through them so if there was any small particles making scratches in the orifices when they get flushed through then it would be about the same difference.

Best thing to do to keep the injectors operating properly is to run good fuel and keep the fuel filter changed on a regular basis.

and from what I have read around here use fuel from different makers. They all use different cleaners and some fuels clean out what others leave behind.

Sorry, I should have said "my new Mustang WILL come with a funnel?". I have a 2011 on order but I haven't owned a Mustang since 2000. I've actually been reading through the 2010 owners manual thanks to a downloadable copy someone pointed out to me, but I've only gone through about a third of it so far.

From the 08 Owners Man:

Fuel quality
If you are experiencing starting, rough idle or hesitation driveability
problems, try a different brand of unleaded gasoline. “Premium” unleaded
gasoline is not recommended for vehicles designed to use “Regular”
unleaded gasoline because it may cause these problems to become more
pronounced. If the problems persist, see your authorized dealer.
Do not add aftermarket fuel additive products to your fuel tank. It should
not be necessary to add any aftermarket products to your fuel tank if you
continue to use high quality fuel of the recommended octane rating. These products have not been approved for your engine and could cause damage to the fuel system. Repairs to correct the effects of using an aftermarket product in your fuel may not be covered by your warranty.
Many of the world’s automakers approved the World-Wide Fuel Charter
that recommends gasoline specifications to provide improved

performance and emission control system protection for your vehicle. P 258
