Couple questions regarding 2010 mustang.

Ok, I just got my GT coupe yesterday, and I just have two questions.

1) when I get out of the car after driving it, sometimes it smells like burning rubber. I'll admit I have been pretty aggressive from a dead stop, but no burn outs or anything. Does anyone else ever notice that?

2) This one sounds stupid, but when my stick is in any gear and i'm driving, the stick heavily vibrates, is that normal? I'm coming from a 4 cylinder scion to a v8 ford so I might just not be used to the constant rumble of the car.

Thanks.

Also, this car is ****ing amazing for anyone looking at a 2010 for good prices.

The 10 I test drove had no gearshift stick vibrations that I noticed.

Burning rubber smell I would have checked at the dealer under warranty, maybe a slipping belt or something touching the exhaust.

I can tell you that (5.0) has the factory oil "burn off" smell after you get on it when it's new. Was told -this is normal

Well, I've only noticed the smell twice, not after every time I drive it. They don't seem to be really big issues. Just curious if it is normal.

That's the first time I've read about the shift lever vibrating a lot. I would say that it is not normal.

I wouldn't let either one go un-attended, it's under warranty and I would take it in and get both things checked out.

I took the car out again, about ten minutes ago, and I wanted to pay attention the two things I had questinos on. GJM20115.0 said he thinks it's the smell of oil. I payed closer attention and it smells like oil, not rubber. I guess the two can be easily confused. It is not a lot, very minor, is that normal for these new cars like GFM20115.0 says?

I think I should clarify on the vibrating. The stick does not move when it is in gear, it's when I put my hand on the stick that it feels like, well, a vibrator. It is only noticable in 3rd gear though, gears 1 2 4 and 5 are very minor. When i'm in 3rd and I feel it the most, and it really only starts to act up when I'm starting to gun it. Does it still sound like a problem? Again, the stick does not bounce around while it is in gear, its actually very firm in place. It just rumbles as the engine increases in power.

The stick is tranmitting noise when it vibrates or you just feel it when your hand is on it?

Oil burning smell isn't normal to me for a new car, I would at the very least keep a very close eye on it for any signs of where the smell is coming from.

I just feel it when my hand is on the stick. Just like on my ranger, so I don't think that is a potential problem.

The oil smell isnt cosistant though, I smelt the same smell on my scion, it only happened when I did a burn out, so that is what made me originally think it was rubber. Its like its a quick passing smell, but it immediatly goes away. It smells like its coming from the AC vents. Just like the scion.

Was it brand new with low miles (i.e. under like 250?) I remember mine smelling a bit of burned something or another... A good investment might be an oil separator, I got me one recently and It's collecting a lot of the oil that finds its way into the internals.

Mine in particular is the JLT Oils Separator... Solid piece.
Glad you're enjoying the GT!!

Smell coming from the a/c vent would be a smell drawn in from the engine compartment through the HVAC intake. I would still keep an eye on it.

If you are just feeling vibration theough the stick and not hearing it then, no, shouldn't be a problem.

I got the car with 200 miles, new. Yeah I've spent maybe an hour and a half in the car so far and its like a quick scent. Its more near the tires if I get out of the car, but i have only noticed that once.

At what point should I think the smell is a problem and bring it in? Right now I think I am just being over protective.

Thanks.

If it's still doing it in a few weeks after you have a thousand miles or more on it, I would take it in. Might as well take advantage of the warranty, you paid for it.

I ride with my hand on the stick (gearshift! ) all the time and I don't feel any vibration at all, it sounds like a very minor thing but might be worth getting checked out.

Like the others said, the smell is probably just newness burning off . . . but it if continues that's worth a look too.

Tony, thanks for the pointer on the oil collector . . . that will probably prevent the occaisional blue smoke on startup (only happens when the car was run for a short time without waming up before that, like moving a cold car in the driveway then turning it off) . . . I assume you can buy those from they typical catalog places, and it looks like an easy install?

The new burn smell should go away after several heat cycles. My GT has very minimal vibration in the shifter .. although I did get a brand new tranny at 700 miles ...

Do you have the 401A package? I've noticed a little more "vibration" when I've driven cars with the 401A **** than the 400A ****. But really it's just the V8 transmitting the power through the driveline. Nothing to worry about, and really I kinda liked it haha!

The smell, like others have said, should go away after the car is driven for a while and gets broken in.
