Changing oil question

I will be changing my oil soon and remember reading something about a cover by the oil drain. Is this correct? Do I need to remove this before draining or is there an easy way around it? What about resetting the computer ofter the change?

The cover is over the filter and there is a removable panel.

Still will probably get oil on it but just keep a rag handy.

ahh ok thanks. I have not been under the car yet other than a quick peak. Any idea if a gt will roll up on a regular set of ramps without scraping?

I use a set of rhino ramps I got from Advance Auto without any problems w/scraping.

Before doing the oil change, pick up a box of store brand freezer bags (1 gallon size). Loosen the oil filter to where you can turn it by hand w/o much force and before any oil leaks out. Then place the bag around the filter/housing so it catches any oil that leaks out when you get the filter off. This will keep from any oil getting on that cover.

The first time you do this it will seem kind of tricky. But it is not tough to turn that oil filter while the bag is over it.

great tip on the bag, that would have kept the mess off my driveway too

(it's been a while since I've done my own oil changes, forgot how much oil comes out of the filter)

You'll need a set of real low profile ramps -- the ones at my local Advance weren't low enough for my 2010 . . . but I do mine in the driveway sloped down, so that when the car is up on the ramps it is pretty level, which makes the ramp clearance problem worse.
