My 2 cents: No matter how miraculous the oil is, it should be changed at about the 1000-mile point in order to get rid of all of the break-in particulates. Thereafter you can stick with the recommended schedule.
I first changed my oil at 1700 miles (too freakin' busy to get it at 1000), put in Pennzoil Ultimate full-synthetic in, and then have been going by the oil life maintenance minder ever since (2nd change was signalled at about 7200 miles, which is less than 50% compared to my BMW maintenance minder, which tried to squeeze 15k to 19k miles out of its 5W-40 in between oil changes).

So i changed the oil this afternoon, checked for metal shavings or any foreign particles, but couldn't find anything. The oil was obviously a little on the dark side and needed to be changed . Very scheptical about those 10000km oil changes.
So i finally decided to go with Mobil1 5W20 synthetic oil and FL500s Motorcraft filter. 8 1/2 quarts went in the crankcase with new filter. Hope she's happy now.
