Not the car guys, but the oil. This is my dilema......
800 miles and closing in on my first year ownership. It's got the original oil and need a top off as i'm missing about 1/2 quart.
I'm thinking of replacing the oil myself and going with Amsoil synthetic. 5W20, 10W30....don't know for now.
Do we know for sure what type oil Ford put in our 2011 GT's ! We know it's 5W20, but is it a syn-blend or some other weight. Does it have break-in additives in it ! I hate not knowing what's in my engine.

Its Motorcraft Semi-syn as far as I know.

I would change it. Even though your miles are low, its been almost a year with that factory oil.

Yep...change it to what ever you want to run. Then get out and drive the thing......but if you are not the type to drive it much or hard, the benefits of a full synthetic with their long oil change intervals will not be worth it in my opinion. I would just run the Motorcraft product.

The factory oil is just the normal stuff....not a break in oil at all.

Change it!!! Get all the break in gunk out of there...

5W20 Synthetic blend. $3.75 a quart at Walmart x 8 quarts. They prob don't have the Motorcraft filters yet though, unless they got them recently. They should have a Fram alternative. TG or PG 10575. Motorcraft is FL 500S.

DON'T EVER USE A FRAM FILTER IN YOUR CAR!!!

Please, for all that is holy, don't use a fram. They are pure junk, and no better then cardboard. Cardboard end caps, prone to leaking, so all that filtered gunk goes right back into your engine.

Get a motorcraft one from your dealer or a mobil 1 filter!

I changed the **** in mine at 1000. I put mobil 1 in it with a fomoco filter. I only have 1600 on it now but wanted to get fords oil out just because of my own uncertainty with it.

Put 0w20 Amsoil in it and you engine will love you.

I wish i had more time to drive her, but she's put away for 4 months when wheather gets crappy and my schedule is pretty busy, so mostly a w-e car when it's nice out.

That was my main concern, didn't feel right leaving all that junk in the oil pan after 9 months.

I wasn't gonna use a FRAM don't you worry, i already have my Motorcraft filter on hand.

I'm thinking Amsoil 5W20 syn-blend since WHEN i drive her, she's in for a good ride.

Well here's my excuse, anyways. I bought what I thought was the right Motorcraft filter at Wally World, and went home and drained the oil. When I dropped the plastic panel underneath to change the filter, i realized I had the wrong one (I got the one the selector thingy at the store told me). Saturday night, no dealership open. Had to do it. For what its worth I bought the 10 dollar 10,000 mile one, that seemed to be the best quality. Won't happen again, trust me. I truly apologize to all of you out there who were highly offended by my Fram usage

Note: I have been using Fram filters on all of my cars for 15 years and never had an engine explode on me. Not even once

I guess I have some founded research data on how bad Frams are for your engine coming my way on this thread...........

There's a Redline oil retailer just around the corner, i'll look into that as well.

The correct specified replacement Motorcraft oil filter IS a little different from the one your car came with from the factory. THere was a thread here last Summer on the topic. One of our members (I think his name was Gene), identified the factory filter as a Wix filter and even provided the Wix p/n in case anyone really wanted to stay purely factory.

The above notwithstanding, Wally world around here hasn't carried the FR500S (?) filter - it's only available from the dealer here.

I've used many Fram filters in the past, but there are a lot of folks who hate them. Drove a 1982 Datsun pickup WELL past 200K miles using mostly PH8 Frams. The key is I changed oil + filter often and so I never taxed the limits of the filter. Nowadays with longer oil change intervals I am guessing filter quality is becoming more important.

I don't think it's worth the upcharge to switch oils personally. To go to a full syn isn't a bad thing, but the costs associated with it don't justify an increase in performance to me. If you're really not driving the car much, you may want to consider the Motorcraft full synthetic, instead of the syn blend that is the standard oil for our cars.

I say this because the guys putting hard miles on these (read: track time) are still running factory oil with no ill effects. If you are worried about oil, consider draining it and sending a sample to Blackstone Labs for analysis.

Went to my dealership today to inquire about what oil came in my engine from the factory. I was told Ford used a syn blend 5W20 Motorcraft oil with no break-in additives .
So decided to get a case of Motorcraft " super premium " motor oil and was told by the service manager that it was a syn blend oil even though it was not labelled that way on the bottle.
Looks like they cannot label it as a synthetic blend over here in Canada for whatever reasons, but was reasured that it was the real deal.

Shelby Gt's Run a FORD Racing Filter and Motorcraft 5w20{ Full Synthetic}. Not a bad choice.

I run Motorcraft 5w50 Full Synthetic in my Gt-500 along with the FRPP Filter. Works for me!

Btw, Purolator makes a lot of Ford's oil Filters.

As a side note if you are going to run an exotic {read that not stocked in many places}oil make sure you keep a supply on hand so you do not get caught a quart low and no where to buy in a pinch.

I changed my oil, the first time at 3000 miles and went to Mobil1 5W20 with the Ford filter. The second time at almost 7000 miles, I had the dealer do it for warranty protection. Currently running 5W20 Motorcraft full syn with the Ford filter.

Not to get off track of this Thread.....Change it whenever you are happy with. I over kill because my Mustang is one of my several hobbies. I changed my oil at 500 miles then around 1,000 miles after that. At 3,000 miles i changed to Motorcraft full synthetic. I now change my oil every 9 months which is around 2,500 miles. I love my Mustang


I have a cousin that never changes his oil on his Escort. With over 100,000 miles on it, the engine sound good and doesn't smoke.
