Catback vs. Axleback

Are the gains of a catback worth the extra $$. How does it effect the sound and do you loose any low end tourque. Also is a tune required with a cat back?

Right now im probably going to go with either borla or magnaflow so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Not much gains unless you include Headers and high flow cats. Save your money and get the whole set up with Borla axelbacks. Heres a link of my Headers and midpipe with over axel for your advice: http://www.americanmuscle.com/slp-lo...dx-1112gt.html

Then axel back I got: http://www.americanmuscle.com/borla-...ck-2011gt.html

These were a good combination if you like it loud with some good power !!!!

Yes this set up need a tune and it gave me almost 60 rwhp after a dynotune. Heres a video: http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o...MG_0003-13.jpg ,but catbacks alone does not need a tune.

Now, I'm not 100% sure about 10+ mustangs, but I know that on 05-09s there's really no point in getting a catback over axleback performance wise. These cars came from the factory with a very good exhaust system compared to a lot of cars and there's really no performance to be gained by any changes south of the cats.

If it were me, I'd spend the money you would spend on a catback on axleback and O/R or high flow midpipe. Then you're getting the sound and actually getting some performance gains.

No tune required for either. If you want a little sound and nothing else, an axle back setup is the way to go. If you want a little extra, look at swapping the factory H pipe for an X pipe. Corsa advertised their X-pipe/axle-back combo as a 10hp increase.

I am really not sure, but I would'nt think so. Since this setup comes cats, I would think it's for a reason, so you would not have issues passing smog.

biggest gain in HP would be the off road x or h pipe. Deleting cats with an off road midpipe is worth about 14 hp in both x or h pipe. This will also make the louder and throatier. The mufflers are just for sound, you won't feel anything from it other than maybe losing some weight. The next big gain in exhaust would be to upgrade to longtube headers or even better "turbo headers" FYI have a stock 2012 GT with only an OR X pipe from lethal. i like my sound. Louder and subtle. Eventually I'm going with Borla S-type. This is THE exhaust for this car.

hawgs74,

My suggestion for you is to pick a cat-back or axle-back that fits your budget and sounds the best to you. The performance gains are minimum and there's no torque loss. Also, like stated above, a Tune is not necessary for the Mustang to run correctly. However, a Tune will wake the car up a lot with throttle response and gain a few more ponies!

Hope this helps!

Shane

Another thing to consider is if you ever do plan on doing headers or updating the mid-pipe later, to take that into consideration for your choice. If you do plan on upgrading, you may not want as loud of an exhaust. I have a V6 and loved the sound of the FRPP axleback exhausts, but since I plan on upgrading to BBK headers at some point, I decided the FRPP's were just too loud and decided to go with magnaflow catback streets since I've heard them with those headers and they sound really good. For instance, I also like the Roush's but after hearing somebody online that had them with BBK headers, they sounded horrible.

I would say about 100 lbs to 120lbs. They have to be twice as much as my Borla catbacks and UPS in the box says they were 56 lbs. Putting the stock catbacks in the same box to take home, I was surprised home much heavier they were.

Catback, you mean including the H pipe and over the axle resonators? If so, then I could see them shaving 50-60 lbs. total. If you're just talking about the mufflers, then about half that.

I am talking catback, H-pipe, over axel resonators and mufflers all together. You will lose some weight if you change the stock mufflers to any after market mufflers.
