I was on 129 near Tapoco last month. I found that part to be pretty congested. I felt like Hwy 28 between there and Bryson City though was a decent alternative. Hardly anyone was on it and you had plenty of room to stomp on it through the curves. Intersting stuff along the way to see too.
Cherohala Skyway is nice, but be prepared to get stuck behind slow Harleys.
I made a pretty nice round trip Cherohala Skyway -> 129 -> Hwy 28 to Bryson City -> Cherokee,NC and back home through Newfound Gap.

That looks like it could be a really fun/dangerous road in the wet. In the dry, I think I would drive cross country just to drive that road! It looks awesome! I love me some tight, technical twisties!

Patrick -- US 129 (aka Deals Gap aka Tail of the Dragon) is one of the finest driving roads on the east coast. 318 turns in 11 miles with basically no driveways, cross-streets, or other normal road obstacles.
On the other hand, there are tons of motorcycles, cars, and sometimes large trucks, RVs, trailers, etc.
For a little fun, watch this YouTube video:

You people all siphon with a large amount of negative pressure. I mean, honestly. Don't describe it, SHOW IT, for cripes sake...
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sour...,1.783905&z=10
THAT is good for both a Mustang and your motorcycle, if you have one. Three Twisted Sisters: 335, 336 and 337.
I'd love to do this on a motorcycle, as I've done it in a car several times:

... well, except for the extreme south side of Haleakala, past Lindbergh's grave, where it's all gravelly... I don't think I'd like takin' a motorcycle there. So back from Hana through Makawao and over to the west side.
So, do that. Much more funner.

I drive the Cherohala Skyway TN/NC at least once a year....definitely in the fall.
The drive I enjoy the most often, at least once a month, is U.S. 64 (River Road) from Ducktown, TN to Cleveland, TN through the river gorge next to the Ocoee and along Parksville Lake.
In the mountains where I live, almost every drive is a great experience.....especially with the top down, which is probably 75% of the time.
