Best places to drive your new Mustang
I thought I'd pose this question to everyone since most of us are driving enthusiasts.
I nominate the following:
East coast:
1. Deals Gap (Tail of the Dragon) in Western NC/Eastern TN (US 129)
2. Cherohala Skyway (NC/TN)
3. Blue Ridge Parkway (NC/VA)
4. Skyline Drive (VA)
5. Rt 211 between Sperryville and Luray (VA)
West Coast:
1. PCH -- anywhere but especially near Big Sur (CA)
2. Rt. 74 between Lake Elsinore and San Juan Capistrano in (CA)
3. Canyon roads near Malibu (CA)
I need some new destinations.

Kieran,
There's some nice drives to be had on 611 headed into the Poconos. The drive out near/to Ringing Rocks Park (google it) ain't too shabby either. Lots of woods/shade for those hot summer days when you want to drive.

This is a fortuitous thread, Jerry. This August we'll be taking a trip through North Carolina. I had already planned on driving the Blue Ridge Parkway through NC and driving the Deals Gap road and various undetermined scenic roads through Tennessee. I will add Cherohala Skyway to the plan.
In the middle of the country, I would recommend taking the Great River Road if one has time. I've only driven a small portion of it in Missouri (Hannibal to Louisiana, MO) but it was heavenly. Nice scenery and lots of awesome curves. Some day my wife and I are going to take the GRR from Saint Paul, MN all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. I've read that the entire road is very nice.
If you find yourself in the ballpark of Red Lodge, Montana in the summer, take the Beartooth Highway. The elevation is so high that the road is closed all winter, except for snowmobiles. Great drive. Also nice, Interstate 90 from Boseman, Montana to the Idaho border. If you're used to mountains maybe it's not such a big deal. But coming from the plains like me, it's a heck of an interesting drive. And stop in St. Regis at Frosty Drive-In for a huckleberry shake. Yowza, that was good.
I've found a lot of good info on www.roadtripamerica.com.
Oh, I just remembered a couple of others. Spearfish Canyon in South Dakota, in the Black Hills area. Needles Highway in that same area is also nice. The North Shore Scenic Drive from Duluth, Minnesota to the Canadian border is very nice, especially in the fall. Have some turkey wild rice soup while you're there.

I've got a camper in Jim Thorpe, so maybe I'll take a long out of the way cruise up there one weekend, rather than the Turnpike.
I've heard about RRP, but never went. Maybe now that I have a car that I want to drive all the time, I'll make the trip.
Thanks.

Harriman State Park -- http://nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/14...ing-there.aspx
Taconic State Parkway -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taconic_State_Parkway
From Wikipedia: Sociologist Lewis Mumford, who often criticized the effect of superhighway construction on contemporary cities, always advised friends traveling up from New York to visit him at his house in Amenia that they should take the Taconic to do so.[14] He described it as "a consummate work of art, fit to stand on a par with our loftiest creations".[15] The engineers, he said, had avoided "brutal assaults against the landscape". Albany-born novelist William Kennedy, whose family frequently drove the Taconic during his childhood to visit relatives further south, calls it "a 110-mile postcard. It's the most beautiful road I've ever known — in all seasons". "You can drive it with confidence", says automotive writer David E. Davis. "There are no bad surprises about the way the road is engineered."

Cherohala Skyway is nice, but be prepared to get stuck behind slow Harleys.

I made a pretty nice round trip Cherohala Skyway -> 129 -> Hwy 28 to Bryson City -> Cherokee,NC and back home through Newfound Gap.

I live in the Roanoke/Lynchburg area and am only 2 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway so its the BRP for me. Nothing I like better than to be on it when the traffic is almost none and working those gears!
