Bad day for the 5.0 :(

Wow, glad you are ok!! Looks like it would be a total but who knows . . . is there any damage to roof or interior floor boards crinkling? Were you able to still drive it to the shoulder? Good chance the rear end and tranny are out of wack if so I'd say they won't fix.

I actually ended up landing IN the shoulder, pretty sure the car isn't even moveable. Tow truck driver tried starting it up and it didnt' even fire up.
I'm hoping they won't. Did some research, state regulation in PA says 80% of book value means a totaling. Not quite the number I was hoping for here, I don't see it reaching 25+ grand

I'd say that car is fux0rd. Since it's a unibody car there's no frame to get damaged. However... it looks like the rear axle got moved around a lot, and possibly shoved the driveshaft into the transmission. That would definitely total the car.
As it is, it looks like you'd just have to cut the entire rear end off and weld a new one in. That also sounds like a total to me. Glad you're ok.
Air bags will not deploy in a rear-end collision. The initial, greatest accelerative force is back into the headrests, which are shaped like they are for a reason - to prevent whiplash and limit rearward head movement. Based on the severity of the collision, I'd say you have those annoying, stupid headrests to thank for not having massive whiplash and a concussion.

And I forgot about the headrests, I'll bet you're right there!

If you start to get sore, I'd head to the hospital, don't take any chances.
Best wishes.

My wife was rear ended in her Tundra. Truck was only hurt a couple of grand, my wife has had ongoing neck injuries and head ache. Almost a year now, still fighting with their insurance agency.

If it's on the car driving, sure I'll give it that, he was in a truck and should have realized the increased distance he needed to stop

The piece just left of the muffler in the picture is the uni-body frame rail. It has been ripped from the trunk pan and driven down. The back of it is still connected to the bumper support. With that much damage, I severely doubt they will fix it. They might put it on the frame machine and pull it out to see how well it retakes shape, but I really think it's a total.
