Wow. 7k miles on the motor and a $3k repair bill. I was trying to talk myself into a tune but this really seems to be a disturbing trend. So much for the "you'll be fine as long as you use a reputable tuner" mentality...

interesting
Under normal driving I noticed the car was smoking . it didn't do it at idle only when I would give it about 50-75% throttle. A few days later I had to go out of town and it was smoking while just driving. I turned the car back to stock and took it to the local dealer. my mechanic tried to help me with the situation as much as he could but since the new TSB release it was basically a done deal. Car has 7k on it, tune maybe 1k miles 93 aggressive cam tune, and yes I only used 93 octane in it, I'm not an idiot don't throw that one at me.3,000$ after parts and labor. and all of this nonsense about resetting the drive cycles putting it to stock driving 50 miles etc. is CRAP. the mechanic told me everything, EVERYTHING is fingerprinted on your pcm, there is no hiding it. best of luck to those who may tune and have this problem.

This is exactly what my service rep told me as well, just further more proves your going to have to PAY to PLAY.

With the Coyote's high compression there's less room for error. And since the new hypereutectic pistons ain't like the old one's, tuning too close to the edge = boom.
Plus there's no guarantee your fuel supply is consistent. So tuning for 93 and trusting you always get good 93 is a risk.
I've also read where some tunes were ignoring the back knock sensor.
In contrast, the 4.6 3V has lower compression so the tunes weren't pushing it so close to the edge.

You have to put your trust into the tuner/tune and be willing to shell out if you gambled wrong....
These aren't the old engines, they are newer and way more newer tech in the PCM than ever before.
I feel bad for the people being guinea pigs for the tuners who A ) feel that they can use the same tricks as before, B ) don't have the time or resources to test what they are doing is going to last under any and all conditions or are C ) being pretty layed back about what they are doing and ignoring certain parameters, or not understanding the consequences of their actions.

I've also wondered if the change in firing order plays a role as to why #8. Shouldn't, but its a thought. Cause #4 is a back cylinder also but I haven't read any issues with that hole. ![33](https://themustangsource.com/forums/images/smilies/33.gif)
5.0 Coyote: 1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2
4.6 3V (same as 351): 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8

he just posted up just now again....
"For those of you who are svtp members. Here is my post from svtp I said I would post here,
Fellas, this is my car you are discussing. My name on s197 is "35annGT", I would be more than happy if you would like to pm me to give you my cell number and I will tell you my situation. The forum boards are getting old. Yes, i deleted my previous posts on s197 because the problem was solved. I ran a sct "canned" tune for about...a day. Next day my BBr tune was loaded and ran that for a few months, no problems. About a month ago I ordered the lund 93 cam tune, I live about a mile from LRS, the owners car as well as avoid 4 others sitting in the lot are BBR tuned and have had no problems. As well as all the other BBR tuned cars they sell their tuner to. After about a month of my lund tune I had this Issue. Put two and two together Its not hard. And I will post this on s197 so you can see this is a legit post from me."

Just as I was thinking of a tune again I see this today... Anyone else notice that the failures posted lately have had an "aggressive cammed" tune? Could this be the problem?

My gut tells me that's exactly what it is. You're better off buying the 89 tune, sacrificing the couple horses and running 91+ octane fuel. You leave yourself room for bad fuel. Most of these guys are probably looking to eak the most power possible w/ tune + cai. You do that, you're liable to have to replace an engine...

Thing is there is no proof this even happened. Could be some kid drumming up trouble. He needs to show some proof before everyone gets in an uproar. Show us the work order with the work being done.

It doesn't surprise me. My last car was an 02 Regal GS that came with a blown v6. Common mods were smaller pulley w/ tune and cai. I had headers/pulley/cai and did my own tuning ( based on a purchased image ). The rules for that engine apply here. Too much timing + compression coupled with bad fuel = boom. I believe I read a quote from Lund, where he basically said these cars have to be tuned like an engine running 2-3 psi of boost. I would never run a tune that required 93 octane. fwiw.
