Adaptation

Ok so here's my question. I have heard lots of rumors to the fact that the 2010+ will be very similar to the previous and will in fact be able to adapt a large portion of parts to our stangs. Basically I'm wondering what yalls thoughts on this are. I love my stang and would not want the interior nor the front end nor the hood to change to what I have seen so far on the new models. However I would die for hips on mine as well as the side mirrors on the update and would be willing to pay for it. I was thus wondering what you all thought the chances of adaptability were. I mean assuming the basics stay the same (quarter windows/roof line) which is what we seem to be seeing in spy shots. Just throwing it out there and wondering if anyone else has had this idea.

Slim to none.

The greenhouse won't change... but look at the panels.
Where the hip would be, and the new lines, probably won't gel well with the current cars lines.

Make no mistake, the cars panels will change.
The platform will not

Have you ever seen someone swap a quarter panel? I have and its not exactly the easyest thing in the world. Your front fenders are held on by bolts (esay removal) rear quarters are welded to the vehicle and you would have to cut under the rear quarter window. Sure it is easy to retrofit a bumper cover, side mirrors, tail lights, but adding "hips" to a current production model... It's a little more then a weekend project.

I'm happy with what I've got. Sure, I'm looking forward to seeing the '10, hips, GT500 inspired front end and all, but I wouldn't want my current '05 to be seen to be pretending to be something its not.

I remember a few years ago, Dugan Racing, or at least I think it was them, they reskinned a '95 with '01 body panels. It came out good but it was a lot of work.

I'd say that even if it were workable to swap side panels, odds are it would't look as good as you think. The "hips" quarters are being designed as part of an overall reskin, and won't likely integrate well with the current car's look. You'd get far better results hiring a fabricator to custom-craft hips that work with the current body. Of course, its Effing expensive .....

Each side of the mustang is a single stamping including the rear fender, quarter window, door opening, windshield post and internal structure to the front,on the inside of the front fender. To cut off the rear fender and replace it with one with hips would be very difficult and probably weaken the integrity of the entire car. I'd buy a new one rather than ruining one of the earlier models.

I know someone who put the front end of a 99-04 GT on his 94 Cobra and it looks pretty cool but a little odd in some spots. While the front end is squared and blocky the back is round and curvey. I do remember he had to make special modifications to the doors and fenders to get them to fit correctly. In a nut shell he told me it was not worth the hassel but he got his car featured in 5.0 Magazine. I remember him telling me that he could have bought a 99' GT for the time and money it took to put the front end of one on his Cobra (the Cobra was in a major frontal accident so he wanted to do something new)

Yeah I've seen those and personally I think they are freaking awesome! You guys are definately right though when it comes to the hips being a custom fab job. I was just curious if it was doable. I even was really into the kenny brown custom job that had hips but that never got produced either.. (it also had a huge rear end). O well I guess it's simply not meant to be now I have to decide if I'm willing to give up so much that I love about mine for hips when the new models come out. Thanks for the input though guys I appreciate it!

Not even remotely worth the effort - assuming it were possible at all.

Ravi ! the best person to answer that question. Would be Tony.

Just click on www.retrobuilt.com Then click on the contact us link, and the phone number should be right there. Just give them a call, and ask to speak to Tony.

In the meantime, best of luck.

Buck ! although I'm awaiting to see what the 2010 looks like. I'm also not about to give up on my 05GT.

As far as I'm concerned..It's going to take much more than just hips, before parting with my current S-197.
