About to pull the trigger on a 2013 Mustang and need negotiating advice
The whole sales/haggling thing is so freaking dark ages to me. I dont want to play a back and forth numbers game. Just give me a decent price. Walked into one dealership, got the MSRP, no deals, sorry. Call up a friend of a friend and get $100 over invoice. First dealer calls me and I say, sorry, just got 3 grand off your price. Calls me back 2 minutes later to try to get me with $50 over invoice. I said no thanks, but if youd offered me $1,000 over invoice first, I mightve taken it. Dumba$$. We should all be paying the same amount but then again its like that for everything. Its just magnified on larger purchases. Thanks for your help BTW, 05fordgt. Now I gotta here that car show story some time.
I have made the mistake before of buying a car without being educated in the process. I also bought it on an impulse, something I know now I'll never do again. Car salesmen are there to sell cars. Some of them are there to take every single penny they can from you. As buyers, we have the knowledge (if we do our homework) of what the car actually costs and what is a reasonable price for it. The good dealerships will work with you and reach that price, the unethical ones won't. Yes, there are some games you have to play with some of them ("I need to check with my manager/supervisor on this, I'll be right back"), but a buyer need not pay more than what the vehicle is worth if they're willing to put some time and research into the purchase, and be willing to walk out the door. There are good dealerships out there, sometimes you just have to work to find them. I live in San Antonio, TX, and had to go three hours away before I found one that would work with me for the car I'm getting. Just takes some time, research and patience.
By the way, had I not found the dealer I did, I'd have bought from Jeff (05fordGT) at the drop of a hat.

I don't even want her with me when I'm buying her car. I bought our first car together and she was with me in the room. I got the price I wanted, a good price, but it was Saturday back in the old days when finance institutions were not open or online. They were trying to rape me with 12% interest when the going rate (1996 I think) was about 6%. So I say forget it. I'll try my CU on Monday. The a hole credit manager said it might be gone Monday and the wife starts crying! I couldn't believe it. I'm trying to walk out and she's crying! FML

She didn't want to go home in her POS car. She was crying because I was making her leave without her new car.
So we left. And I told her she would never be in that room again. I bought every car since on my own and with my own name. Until her Navigator. I finally let them put her name on the title and financing so she could get some credit. Having the house and all the cars in my name wasn't helping her scores any.

Hey Brian, I remember that post. A total "troll" if you ask me, since he hasn't show his face on here since, nor did he post a "purchase order" for the car when asked.
You got a great deal. Remember, holdback is not pure profit for the dealer. That money goes to paying for the lights, employees, benefits, etc. It covers costs that the dealer has to pay. I told this to another forum member when he called me & he totally understood. If all dealers only made money on the holdback only, the sales departments would all close in a few months. Can't earn enough that way to keep a viable business going.
rjgogo's post on what a good deal is, is spot on. If someone wants to order a brand-new 2013 and ask for all the holdback, I won't do it. No reason to. Its a brand-new car. If customer A comes in for my 2012 GT leftover, I will go into the holdback, as its been here for a long while. There are certain times that using it will work, but on a brand-new not yet out model, that isn't one of them.

The reason I felt maybe this guy could of been for real was when Five Oh Brian seemed to be defending the troll saying his dealership would also routinely go below invoice many times a month. Apparently he thought $1500 under invoice was normal. I was quite perturbed by the whole situation
. Felt I got burnt. Eh regardless I'm not hurting for money and I'm ready to roll as soon as this baby gets delivered. I don't mind helping Metro keep the lights on, of course Id much rather be giving my money to car guy like you Jeff. You're a good man and we all appreciate your input.
Hi All, long time lurker who finally took the plunge and signed up for an account so I could post. I'm wondering what the X Plan prices are for the Base GT? (Can someone who has access to this info post?) I know it is invoice, but that seems to be different from pure invoice to invoice plus adverts. It seems like the consensus is that the fees are capped at $100?
Thanks,
Thanks,
Update! Ordered the car yesterday! I have these feelings of, "what the hell have I done". Sticker shock of that much money being invested in an object.
But, the car should come in 1-2 weeks before my birthday. I'm still quite excited for it.

Ok good, seemed like that deal was too good to be true. Glad you agree. So maybe I did get a great deal

The reason why that guy's price wasn't true, was $1,500 under invoice? Really? With only about $800 in holdback? So the dealer is basically losing everything on the car and then some! That's why I didn't believe it. Under invoice on leftovers, yes, it happens, but its not routine on a new release car. Maybe $500 on a car I want to go (plus Ford will up the rebates to help usually) If a dealer does it, they are afraid of asking for a little profit and they don't sell cars using their dealership's pluses, or showing the car, explaining the features, but only by price.
