About to pull the trigger on a 2013 Mustang and need negotiating advice
What I'm looking at getting
V6 Coup Premium
Eq group 201
Recaro, Perf. Package, Glass Roof, Rear video Cam, Accessory Package.
Using the price list I found on this site, THANKS BTW, The invoice (with holdback) comes to $31,608.50 and MSRP of $34,435. Edmunds says a fair price $33,450.
Now I'm at the point of "Where do I begin in negotiations?". The dealership had a 2012 premium marked up nearly $9k from MSRP. The dealer explained it that the owner had several lots to maintain, etc, turn a profit yada yada. But they also don't have ANY 2013s on their lots.
I have enjoyed my experience with this dealer. Very nice guy, young, fun. I want the company (Him mostly) to get his money's worth out of selling me this car, but I don't want to get ripped off either.
Do I go in asking for the $31,608 number or work towards that fair price from edmunds?
Also any advice on my options with the car itself is appreciated ^_^
~EDIT~
UPDATE: I went in today to talk price. I worked him down from MSRP+5k to right around 5% over invoice. 36,700ish out the door (incl taxes, fees, Oil changes till 10k mi, and all season spare tires). I'm essentially getting the car at the Edmunds.com true market value.
We haven't finalized anything yet, have to go in tomorrow to talk with the new car ordering guy to place the order. Getting it in Deep Impact blue ^_^ excited!
~EDIT#2~
Car is ordered! 36,700 OTD which is the Edmunds TMV price. Now I join the waiting club!

If you don't want to worry about negotiating but still get a great price sign up to get x-plan (this thread has info: https://themustangsource.com/f726/fo...ustang-475147/ ). It works out to be just a hair over invoice. If they need $9k over MSRP to be able to support their dealerships...they are doing something wrong and you probably should look elsewhere. For a standard (non boss/gt500) mustang that just sounds crazy!
Agreed. I don't care how much you like the guy, $9k over MSRP for a V6 is ludicrous. I would make it clear to the salesman that you are not entertaining any price so high, and if there is no intention by him to remove the ADM entirely, I'd take my business elsewhere. Absolutely no reason to pay anything over MSRP for a car, and like the guy above me said, x-plan by itself saves you thousands off MSRP as well. Nine thousand over MSRP is just ridiculous.
You will get responses telling you you're paying too much for "just a V6," but there is nothing at all wrong with choosing the options over a base GT if you value those options over the additional power.

Worry about getting the best deal for you. Let the dealer and salesman worry about getting the best deal for themselves. If you end up with a great deal and you think the salesman went above and beyond, drop him a check in the mail with a note saying thanks.
Just curious but what is that listed price on the 2012? At 9k over msrp that almost has to be more than what it would cost to directly order a 2013 from the factory and pay msrp.
I am getting a pretty similar car to the one you listed and my dealer is giving me 2 options on the price.... I know the guy so he offered me 500 over invoice or xplan (he is going to work out both prices and let me know which one ends up being better because I qualify for the $500 recent college graduate program which you can't get under xplan as I understand it which should make that option cheaper).
Either way in general you should be getting very close to invoice and on a 2012 I would expect them to go under that since they more than likely want to clear out the 2012's to make room for the 2013's.... 2013 should be just over invoice.

Sounds like a great car! I personally have no use for a rear view camera and I hate the accessory packs, but it's your car. If that's what you want, get them and enjoy!

Start at the lower number and see where it goes. If they can't do it for the Edmunds number or lower, strongly consider going somewhere else.
This salesman and dealership are already treating you like an idiot. Dealers are free to try to get what they want, but apart from maybe a Boss Laguna Seca, no 2012 Mustang should have a mark-up. 2012 is not only last year's model, it's last year's style. I personally prefer the 2012, but the dealer doesn't have to know that. Unless it's something out of the ordinary, they should be begging to sell it to you at invoice minus the incentives.

Thank you for an outsider view on the dealership/dealer relationship I have going. I'll very much consider this going into the bargaining phase. And about the paying the salesman yourself, is that even legal?

By the way, I was trying to get a feel for how long this process, once started will take. He was estimating 6 weeks from order to delivery.

Have you considered a buying service? I'm in the Phoenix area and I bought my 2012 GT Premium in January from Centenial Leasing and Sales, all I had to do was tell them what I was looking for and they did the work. The MSRP was $35,100 I got it for $30,100 plus the $3,000 rebate from Ford lowering the price to $27,100. They shopped my trade in, a 2006 Tacoma Pre-Runner and got me $15,000 for it. I think it was a smoking good deal and no aggravation on my part what so ever!

Your spec looks fantastic. I wish my budget was big enough to include the performance package and the glass roof. Glass roof probably adds weight to the car but it is pretty cool nonetheless. Edmunds is a good point to start bargaining from. I'm sure if the dealer has "lots to maintain...yada yada yada", then he's got some wiggle room left in terms of negotiation. Have you bought cars from this dealer before? That may help some as well.
The performance package is another thing I'm on the fence about. I could probably do without it. I'm not a racer, but I want the car to go where I want it to when I want it to. Do you think I should drop this?
Driving a hard bargain doesn't make you a bad person. It makes you a smart buyer. The salesman will try to get the best price he/she can for the product and the best way to do that is to be nice to the customer. On the other hand, you are trying to buy at the lowest possible price. The only way to do that is to be tough with the negotiations. Arm yourself with as much knowledge about the car and try to figure out what it cost the dealer for the car. Then offer him that and a reasonable profit. So put on your game face (GRRRRRRRR) and go over there and do business. It would huge help if you have cash or a pre-approved letter from your bank or credit union.
All I had to do was tell one dealer that another dealer was offering me $100 over invoice and within 2 minutes I got a call back saying he'd sell me one for $50 over. Tell your dealer you have a better price elsewhere, even if you don't (but obviously better if you do). As far as options, it sounds like you know what you want. Don't let others sway you with what they like. $9K over is insane, however. If a dealer tried that with me on a V6 or GT, I'd laugh and walk away without shaking his hand or saying goodbye.
Just be willing to walk..they know in most cases, they will never see you again....go at end of day/end of month and once they have a lot of time invested in you, they are not going to want you to walk out that door. Just remember, they need you more than you need them.
I just ordered a similar car.
I tried to save as much as possible, and what I found most effective was getting two dealerships to essentially bid for your sale. Get a quote from two dealerships, and take the lower price to the higher priced dealer and see if they can beat it. Then, take that price back to the originally lower priced dealer for another counter offer. I shaved off $700 doing this.
Make sure you've signed up for the brochure by mail to potentially save another $750 at delivery with a private rebate. If you're student or military, don't forget about the $500 there.

Go on the ford site and price out what you want...I did that for both my wife's ford edge sport, and my 2013 5.0 vert....and I can tell you , I got 19 percent off from the website with the taxes included.....any dealer asking above list is looking for a sucker.
Thanks, I'll check that out. http://www.harrisford.com/inventory-...dardbody=Coupe will give you a sense in their second sticker prices!
