Im paying $121 over invoice on my 2013 GT and Im considering it an "OK"deal. I agreed to this deal before I knew about hold backs. Since then, there was a dude that claimed he got his 2013 GT for $1500 under invoice. I classify that as a "great deal". Of course he hasnt shown his face since so maybe it was all BS. But im sure its possible.
Hmm I could be crazy, I can't disprove him but 5k under invoice would be all of their hold back too. I can't imagine them selling it to him for no profit whatsoever on a car that isn't even on the showroom floors yet
As far as the original question is concerned, I wouldn't pay a penny over the Edmunds estimate for the car. Not one penny. Somebody suggested going to more than one dealer and I agree. Play one against the other to get a smoking deal. I like that the buyer was able to go in but wasn't pressured into buying. That's a good sign.
Always remember, the dealer is not your pal. Behind the big smile, they'd screw you every time if you don't put up a fight. And as somebody else said, be prepared to walk. But don't be surprised to see a salesman running through the parking lot after you as you go out to your car. It's happened to me.

I just wanted to show how ridiculous some claims are. Everyone always gets a better deal than the next guy.
I'll be paying MSRP just like most suckers. But not a penny more!

11shelbygt500, I didn't buy a high end car like your screen name suggests you did but the dealer and myself were happy with the deal on my gt. I paid within a couple hundred of what the Edmunds true market value was. I thought that was fair. If I was buying a very expensive, hard-to-find Shelby I'd expect to pay more. The deal in question was for a 6 cylinder mustang so Edmund values apply.

I ordered mine for X-plan, slightly over invoice as I save $399 on the doc fee too. The same day we also leased a 2012 Edge at X-plan. Of course rebates applied to both those prices. Could I have haggled and dealt with a lot of getting one dealer to fight another? Sure. But as a former car salesman I just didn't want to do that, plus I want the dealer to make something as I doubt I'll service it there, unless its warranty, and it seems reasonable to allow some profit. We also got them to stretch quite a bit on the trade and give me what I believe is buy rate on the lease.
Happy times and my car will be here soon!

You got a great deal. Remember, holdback is not pure profit for the dealer. That money goes to paying for the lights, employees, benefits, etc. It covers costs that the dealer has to pay. I told this to another forum member when he called me & he totally understood. If all dealers only made money on the holdback only, the sales departments would all close in a few months. Can't earn enough that way to keep a viable business going. rjgogo's post on what a good deal is, is spot on. If someone wants to order a brand-new 2013 and ask for all the holdback, I won't do it. No reason to. Its a brand-new car. If customer A comes in for my 2012 GT leftover, I will go into the holdback, as its been here for a long while. There are certain times that using it will work, but on a brand-new not yet out model, that isn't one of them.

Last time I checked bud, I DON'T!! And you can ask around about that. And I actually made friends with ALOT of my customers. Especially my Mustang customers, where in the past, when I was doing car shows, (which I don't do anymore, the reason why, is a story for another day) I invite them to join me at cruise nights and weekend car shows! Just don't lump EVERY salesperson in that group you mentioned, because not all of them are bad. There are some good ones out there. And no offence, but I don't by Edmunds. 3rd party sites are never 100% accurate on what they post (hence the rebate discrepencies and such).
05fordgt, I'm not suggesting all car dealers are out to screw you per se, but it's been my experience that they will allow you to pay full msrp and then some, plus give you peanuts for your trade-in IF you let them. Put another way, the consumer has to have some smarts about them when buying a car. Or a house. Or anything else.
I don't have any great hostility towards car dealers/salesmen and I actually liked the dealer I bought off of. The thing is, he didn't roll over and I didn't either. I understand that he has to make a profit, which he did, and I don't begrudge him that. After some haggling, we reached a deal, but his first offer(s) were not good for me. Know this, if I had agreed to his first price I would have paid thousands more for my car. That's just how it is.
Why we still buy and sell the same product at different prices depending on the savvy of the customer in 2012 is a mystery to me.
