2012 gen 1 5.0 Oil recommendations (

Short and sweet, to the point . As in the title, 5.0 base model 6 speed Manuel. Car is drinking oil (not surprised, it's a 5.0). Filling 1 quart per month for about 200 miles on Pennzoil (No mods but muffler delete, no leaks, no smoke) I'm curious, what do you all use for oil companies? Which works best for you and why? Pros-Cons?

I have a 2014 Gen 1 (but slightly different version of the coyote than the ‘12, stock 412hp vs stock 420hp). I am running a Ford Performance TracKey tune and have the track pack option. I have opted to run the Motorcraft 5w-50 Full Synthetic that Ford recommends for the S197 track pack cars. Only a little over 22k miles on the car, so not totally an apples to apples compare. But not burning or loosing anything that I can tell.

use what the owner's manual and oil filler cap say, unless there is a specific reason to use something else

I like full synthetics like Mobil 1 Extended Performance or others

I don't think the type of oil you use will make any difference to the oil consumption, unless you go super heavy which probably is not a good idea for other reasons

man that is kinda bad. Where do you think the oil is going? Bad rings or valve guide seals are bad? Does it smpoke on start up a lot? I agree with Bert I don't think a different oil will make a differnce.

Years ago my 5.4 in my F150 was drinking 1 quart of Mobil1 every 500 miles, switched back to Motorcraft Semi Synthetic 5w 20 and it stopped.

that's kind of amazing ...

small tangent: speaking of that 5.4 engine, I am thinking of buying a used 2010 F350 with that engine, has about 130K miles on it ... would that be a mistake?

As long as it has been taken care of they are good, but if abused they can have cam phaser problems like the F150. But on a side note it is not a 6.4.

Agreed! Type of oil shouldn't be a factor.. I would consider having a compression/leak test performed, seems IMO there's either a ring or seal issue that's causing your excessive oil consumption

I would Go with Factory Recommended {Oil & Filter} on{ Next Change} & Check Consumption. What's it Going to Hurt. Be Curious at Results.

Here is a Weird One For You. Back in the Day My 02 F150 Supercharged Spit out a SparkPlug & When the New Head Was Put on the Old Style Shrinking Head to Manifold Gasket was Used. Ford Revised Them From Being a One Piece If Memory Serves. Years Later I had an Exhaust Leak and Low & Behold Half the Gasket was Blocking One Exhaust Port. The Truck had Used Excessive Oil forever But When I Replaced With New Style Gaskets and Unblocking the Port My Oil Consumption Dropped Greatly. Just a Bit of Info For Other Folks.

Harley Trucks are Very Sensitive to Any Vacuum or Exhaust Leak Issues. I fought the Check Engine Light For Years Every Smog Check! Finally at Just over a 100K No More Light!

One of the Other Tales I had Heard Back in the Day was if you had a High Miles Engine and Changed to Full Synthetic they Liked to Leak. Never Heard a Lot of Good about Pennzoil Back in the Days as Well! Just Hearsay for the Other Viewers!

If I have Learned AnyThing Since My 10+ Year Absence here at TMS and Coming Back is That Weird & Unusual seems to be a Lot More Usual these Days as For What Causes What Issues!

Can I get an Amen on That!

KC

Something amiss....my 12 gt uses no oil in-between 6 month or so oil changes. Only 67k on car though, so 6700 miles/year.
No tracking for car at all, but highly spirited is the norm. Rev limiter has kicked in, maybe 50 times over 10 years. Used amsoil 0w-20 for the life of car.
