5w20 or 5w50

I just noticed today that in the owner's manual, it says that for 5.0 cars with Track Pack, 5w50 oil should be used. Cars with no Track Pack should use 5w20. I have been using 5w20 since I started changing my oil when my free oil change ran out. Why different oil viscosity for Track Pack and non Track Pack cars?

In a nutshell, I think the 5w50 holds up better to the heat expected on the track.

Do you drive on a road track? If yes, and you are really hammering it meaning extended time over 4-5K RPM and the oil is getting really hot, then 5W-50 is good . . . if running road track and not getting the oil super hot then 5W-30 should be fine . . . for the street, 5W-20 or 5W-30

I know that the track pack cars were spec'd for 5w50. I believe this was after they went to coated piston skirts and deleted the piston squirt engine squirters. Does anyone know of any issues running 5w50 in an early Coyote with the oil squirters?

In addition to the points above track pack cars have an oil cooler. Thicker oil transfers heat better since it flows slower through the cooler and through the hot parts of the motor.

for street only use I don’t see anything wrong with running 5W-20 or 30 instead of 50.

If your car is a " track pack ", I would use the Mfg. recommended oil.
Both my 2011 & 2014 GT500's called for 5w50, & it wasn't based on how the car was used. ( track / no track use )

OP, does your car have the Track Pack option? What year is your car? The 5W50-requirement was only on the '13-'14 Track Pack. The '10 Track Pack was a different animal altogether.

If your car doesn't have the '13-'14 Track Pack and you've been using 5W20, keep using it. No reason to switch unless you start actually road-course-racing the car or go boosted and beating on it.
Even boosted, lots of cars out there running 5W20.
Only thing I'd maybe say is to switch to a quality full-synthetic instead of the Motorcraft semi-synthetic.
I use strictly Amsoil in my cars, so that's my recommendation.

Every GT500 from 2007-2014 have had the same 5w50 full-synthetic requirement, regardless of any Track Pack option.

The OP doesn't have a GT500.

okay i have a '14 gt convertible how do you know if it has the track pack or not mine came with the oil cooler 9L of oil last oil change,Brembo brakes,19" track pack wheels and track apps in the dash but no mention on the window decal of track pack option i am second owner of the car and it didn't come with S**T in the way of owners manual, jack, lug wrench, etc i had the dealership give me a tire repair kit as with the 19" tires they don't include a spare tire just a air pump with tire sealant and it came with a strut support bar(goes over the motor between the two strut towers...i bought the car as a 2014 Mustang GT Premium Convertible but the track pack options i have seen i have most of them but the dealership said nothing about it

also does anyone know how the oil life is calculated i changed the oil last year in oct2020 and had amsoil 5w20 put in iti have driven the car 1150km or 714Miles since the oil change but last weekend the car said it was due for an oil change is the oil life % done by time or mileage i have reset the oil life 3 times so far but it says 10% oil life with only 714 miles so i am thinking it is time based not done by mileage but i will be changing it again soon as the car is up for sale and i want to turn the light off

Oil change indicater is done by time and type of driving. 1 year is when it will come on. It should be able to reset as algorithm should start over.

i have reset it 2-3 times already and with only 714 miles on synthetic oil it just seems like a waste but it has been a year so i guess it is time regardless of mileage, but i have someone coming to look at the car this weekend so i have to get it done by then

I'm pretty sure on my 2010 it will tell me it is due for an oil change every 6 months, regardless of mileage . . . I have noticed that I put it away in the fall, and shortly after I take it out in the spring, it says it needs an oil change even though I've only driven a couple hundred miles; and if I look at the calendar, it has been about 6 months since I changed the oil and reset the counter in the fall

You can reset the oil life meter without changing the oil which will make the light go out and show 100% oil life.

Remember, it's also calibrated for semi-synthetic oil since that's what comes from the factory. If you're really curious, send an oil sample to Blackstone next time.

So it sounds like you may have a track pack car, but it may not be. With the 19" wheels you are right there is no spare, just air compressor with flat repair gue. There was no lug wrench, jack etc. that you need to change a tire.

True tell visible signs that you might have the track pack are:
Manual transmission
Brembo brakes
19" wheels like this one (other 19" are not factory Track Package Wheels)...

and a oil cap something like this... (Note the 5W-50 and Full Synthetic)

There are a few threads on here that will tell you the exact updates are in the two packages that contain the Brembo brakes. Both the Brembo package (Automatic and Manual) and the full Track Package (Manual only). Here is one that will tell you what was in those packages for the 2013 & 2014.

https://themustangsource.com/forums/...nclude-536289/

If you use the forum search there are others as well that may be more detailed. If you are unable to find them let us know. I can give you a full list of the upgrades.

Owners manuals can be downloaded online. Here is the version for 2014 Mustangs from the Ford owner site.

The Track Pack wasn't available on convertibles.
You have a Brembo Pack car.
Brembo-style 19x9 wheels with 255/40/19 tires, Brembo front brakes,

Good call Gabe. I was thinking that was the case, but not sure enough to include it!

google the mustang brochure for the year that you want and I'm pretty sure it will find it for you

I thought the Brembo package was available with automatic transmission but that is kinda confusing the way it is written

My '13 GT Premium convertible has an auto with Brembos. I read somewhere that the package included the GT500 lower rear control arms. It also had Goodyear summer only tires from the factory.
