You guys really have to get past the dash MPG readout, it's okay for using it to try and maximize your fuel economy but it is not an accurate gauge of the actual fuel economy for a tankfull of gas.
You really have to do it the old fashioned way, fill it up completely, drive it to near empty and re-fill it and check it against the miles driven.

Most dash readouts are off 1-2 MPG one way or another.
