Both are obviously just artist/PS interpretations, particularly the '12. But the scale of change indicated on the '09 is probably correct, basically just a freshening of readily modified body elements (fenders, hood, bumpers, door skins, etc.) while retaining the essential understructures. Think of a '99 type refresh.
The interior will also probably get a similar level of refresh too, probably noticable mostly in upgraded materials and finishes.
Engine upgrades (3.5 replacing 4.0, more ponies for the 4.6) are readily predictable too. I might also guess at a 5.4 version (assuming the Hurricane motor's not on line yet) and an extra cog in the MTX to match the Camaro and Challenger challenge.
The IRS finally getting released, at least as an option, is another possibility too, also in order to meet the upcoming challengers with a fully 21st century suspension.
The '12 speculation is, of course, much more speculative at this stage, but could well be a stem to stern redo. I like the concept of the return of the hatch on the coupe version, ala '74-'93, as that just increases the utility quotient immeasureably with little negatives if engineered properly. As for styling, I too would guess a more modern interpretation of the Mustang DNA, but what it would really look like is anybodies guess at this point. I imagine Ford itself is far from settling on this.

Is that an Azztek?! Aaack, my eyes! That thing is definitely uglier than that updated Mustang pic., which looks like someone got a Focus bumper cover and cut it up to fit the nose of the Mustang. If Ford actually goes along the lines of that posted image, they're getting lazy.

The 2012 model is surely speculation at the moment. I'm sure they aren't looking that far down the road yet with any certainty, but in about 18 months from now I suspect they will start moving on it.

I think Ford should clear this up with a real teaser pic... But they wont, because there is a risk that it can slow down sales if the design is nice enough that people will delay 07-08 purchases to wait for the model.
Although that would be a "Bold" Move

AFBlue - way too early in the morning for pics like that......where did you find them in the "Automotive Hall of Shame".....good thing you didn't include a pic of the AMC Gremlin or I would have lost my breakfast

I can't believe you dissed the Renault and the Chevy Citation! My family owned an '81 Citation, and that thing could scoot! (2.8L V6.) Now the Aztec and EXP I definitely agree on.

our first look isn't going to be some artists' impression or similar BS, it will be when a test mule driver goes in for a coke and someone peels off enough cammo to get a pic, like last time
