Would you Buy this 65 MPG Ford????
I know you're kidding, but actually these diesels have a much smaller carbon footprint over the life of the car than a prius. Mainly due to the battery manufacture the prius is an absolutely FILTHY car to manufacture and get to market. I know you probably don't really care, just goes to show how people can get all jazzed up over things without really understanding them . . .

With efficiency at or above Prius levels, which sell like hotcakes for $25K, and far better looks and presumably, driving dynamics, yes. And long term costs, durability and maintenance will likely be better than the complex Prius and other hybrids (no battery packs to replace). And I would guess that for people who drive primarily on highways, the actual mileage would end up better than a Prius's, which tends to be most impressive in city driving.
Is that MPG in imperial (UK) gallons or US gallons? If it's imperial, then the US MPG is 54. Still respectable but bear in mind that US diesel regs are more restrictive than Euro regs so the MPG in US trim could be even less. However, it be would be a nice option to have available here.

This is precisely why it would be a disaster for Ford. I'd rather have this than a Hybrid any day of the week. But Ford doesn't have to worry about selling this car to me. They have to worry about selling it to Joe and Jane Idiot in the general public. The Prius sells for two reasons, first being that it's a Hybrid, and the other that it's a Toyota. There's no way the American public would buy a $25k sub-Focus hatchback, not unless it's something out there and trendy like a Smart car. Sadly, I think not selling this car in the US is an extremely smart decision on the part of Ford.
