Mike, something we agree on. Seriously. I was beginning to wonder if anyone else ever cared about this nasty side of the Prius.

With efficiency at or above Prius levels, which sell like hotcakes for $25K, and far better looks and presumably, driving dynamics, yes. And long term costs, durability and maintenance will likely be better than the complex Prius and other hybrids (no battery packs to replace). And I would guess that for people who drive primarily on highways, the actual mileage would end up better than a Prius's, which tends to be most impressive in city driving.

I've decided they should just offer the engine in a focus and see what happens.

Not a bad plan, I'm just not sure how easily that could be done. The engine is made over there and the Focus here. Has to drive costs up somewhat.

65 mpg!? I'll take one over a Trukyota Prius anyday. But the prize is a little steep.
They should re-tool one or two factories to offer at least the engine here on the Focus.

Is that MPG in imperial (UK) gallons or US gallons? If it's imperial, then the US MPG is 54. Still respectable but bear in mind that US diesel regs are more restrictive than Euro regs so the MPG in US trim could be even less. However, it be would be a nice option to have available here.

Dont forget that they are using the european test cycle as well, rather than US Cafe cycle.

This is precisely why it would be a disaster for Ford. I'd rather have this than a Hybrid any day of the week. But Ford doesn't have to worry about selling this car to me. They have to worry about selling it to Joe and Jane Idiot in the general public. The Prius sells for two reasons, first being that it's a Hybrid, and the other that it's a Toyota. There's no way the American public would buy a $25k sub-Focus hatchback, not unless it's something out there and trendy like a Smart car. Sadly, I think not selling this car in the US is an extremely smart decision on the part of Ford.
