Ford rejected their first offer, but sources said that Renault is not giving up. If they don't buy Volvo, they will try to buy Saab.

There's a joke here about Frenchmen giving up but I think I'll pass on it... B)

i think buying saab would make more sense. Volvo has integrated very well into ford's family. Saab on the other hand.... they haven't really benefitted much from their GM ties have they? Sure they got to tack their nose onto a GMT and a subaru...
I don't think ford would give up volvo very easily. They're really using the rub-off effect to improve their image. Check out this add with bill ford:

He sublty drops in the volvo connection, just to let people know that that swedish company with such slick cars and such a good reputation is sharing all their know-how with their parent company.
Ford gets more than just the sales from Volvo dealers. They get solid platforms and safety technology and they get to rub off on their reputation.

I would hope that Ford will keep Volvo (and all the other companies they aquired in the past decade). I think it was a smart move to diversify, and as far as I know the only one losing money currently is Jaguar.

I think you'll see Saab being bought by Renault before Volvo.

Like Mustang_Sallad said, Volvo is an integral part of Ford. Especially with the 500 and Freestyle consisting of Volvo chassis's.

I think GM is really going to be hurting with Saab after the loss of Subaru and the Saab 9-5X or "Saabaru" as I call it.

As far as I read, Volvo is making Ford money whereas Saab is a money pit for GM right now. If GM can get rid of saab that would be great for them. It would probably be good for Saab as well.

Saab do have the best tv commercials at the moment though.....

Like others, I beleive that it is in Ford's best interests to keep Volvo, they have always made really solid cars that are reliable. There is a lot of technical know-how there and I should think that Ford had to buy a lot of goodwill when they purchased them.....

I always though Saab is waaaaay overprices, I mean, they cost as much as BMW. They're not cars though, one of my friends used to have Saab turbo from mid 1990s. Very slow for a car with turbo, Chevy Cavalier could outrun it easily.
