Early rumors indicated 315hp so 340hp isn't really surprising once you take Ford's recent habit of under-rating pre-production pieces into consideration. This thing should rock.....Ford has some awesome diesels coming down the pipeline in the near future and they need to make this loud and clear to the marketplace.

Intriguing idea: what about putting this thing into the Mustang? 330-340hp is a healthy boost over the current 300hp 4.6 and the 420ft/lb torque dwarfs the 4.6's 320ft/lb. And aren't so many on this board all about low-end torque-a-plenty, I'll bet this thing makes peak torque at about 9rpm or something.
Maybe not so crazy as it sounds as more and more Euro performance cars are going the diesel route to good effect and the huge fuel economy boost realized is especially relevent in this day of $4 gas, even if diesel is slightly more expensive yet. I guess fitting this thing under the Stang's hood might be a challenge, what with all the turbo plumbing hanging off it.

Well, putting one in a Stang would certainly be unexpected and unothodox, an actual "Bold Move," something Ford hasn't done in the past, oh, decade (Ford GT excepted).
If Audi is considering a diesel version of their quasi-exotic R8, either a V8 version of possibly a V12 (though they seemed to have quashed that option), then perhaps Ford could be a similar forward thinker, beat Chevy and Dodge to the punch and come out with the first diesel pony car.
As for trucks, I think a lot more of them should have diesels as they are a perfect match for the kind of power a working truck actually needs. And even now in cars, modern diesels in Europe show surprising power and performance yet with unbelievable mileage.

Have you checked the price of diesel fuel lately?
Diesel cars don't make much sense in the US because the US refineries use a different process than in Europe which produces less diesel (& more gasoline) from a barrel of oil. There're already a shortage of diesel (and fuel oil) in the US. Producing more diesel cars will only make the shortage worse which will further raise diesel and fuel oil prices.

Diesel tech IMO is a much better investment and solution to the CAFE implementations than any exhisting idea on the market. Seeing how trucks are the biggest offenders and huge sellers. I wouldn't mind seeing all trucks being diesel powered especially if they are efficient with the new diesel powerplants comming online. Making all trucks get in the high 20's ballpark with the new line of diesel tech would be easy. It would give automakers much room to have cars in their lineup that do not have to necessarily get into the 30's to meet the numbers. Seeing an oil burner in a Mustang would be odd but, if a dually diesel truck can hit 10's on stock internals imagine what a 4.4L with around 30 PSI of boost in something that weighs half as much can do.
