I can't put my finger on any one thing in particular but the rear views of it make Volvo and Jaguar pop into my mind.

My impression is Wolfe did more than tweak, the vehicle's hardpoints were the same as they are now (too close to production to change) but it was formerly very boxy and lacked any of the flow it currently has.
Looks great in black, I must say:

The no gear selector is pretty slick, this is the first application of that tech, no? Waiting to hear how smooth it operates.
I'd like nothing more than to see the 365hp Ecoboost in this with the AWD setup...

Nope. While Chrysler did indeed offer pushbutton automatic transmission controls for their PowerFlite and Torqueflite transmissions in '56, a first for mainstream American automakers, Ford followed with a mechanical pushbutton system for Lincoln-Mercury in '57. An electro-mechanical system debuted in '58 (Teletouch transmission system) on the Edsel.

I think they started in the 50's..
I think this is an all around nice car, too bad it don't have a better name though
Would also like to see an emphasis on weight reduction w/out sacrificing luxury. I bet this thing is a porker.
