I'm not even sure why Mazda is bothering with the Tribute. With the CX-7 already in the showrooms and the CX-9 on the way, the Tribute is the ugly duckling in the lineup.

Looks like it has tusks.
The point:
CX-7 and the other FoMoCo Crossovers will not immediately grab all the small SUV sales out there. There's plenty of people who prefer a "real suv," who will embrace the current gas price lows, or who simply like a more rugged look. The continued Escape and Tribute lines will exist mostly to keep hold of those, and to conquer hold-outs who find their brand of choice has moved completely to crossovers.
The real brand conquest sales will come from the Edge, MKX, and CX-7/9s. Eventually, the Escape and Tribute will go the way of the Bronco II, or be rebuilt into something else entirely.

I see what you're saying dude, that makes sense. But yeah... are there really that many people who want a tough, truck-looking compact SUV who will chose the mazda over the ford?? I think the vast majority of people who like Mazda will choose a CX-7 over this. How bout a hybrid CX-7? They'd been saying there'd be a hybrid Edge, but that was before they scaled back their hybrid plans a couple months ago. Oh well.

Hey i didn't say it was a good/noble/forward-thinking notion. Its just the one they're using. When the CX-7 conquers enough segment they'll put Tribute out to pasture, this is their insurance in the meantime.
