So if it is here by the time the weekend rolls around, we (I) have all weekend to drop the tranny and see what a messed up clutch looks like. Supposedly clutch replacements are fairly straight forward. Biggest trouble is dropping the tranny, the rest is SUPPOSEDLY just like bolting anything else together. The kit I plan on buying has the alignment tool come with it, so that should be cool.

 

I have never done a clutch but i have heard the same, the hardest is just getting the trans outta the way.


So once the clutch is done you gotta take it to the track! lets see some 15sec timeslips

As long as there aren't any surprises, the tranny removal isn't that big of a deal. Just need some good ol' ratchet w sockets and assorted extensions w an universal joint (for the upper two bolts of the bellhousing) WD 40 for the exhaust manifold nuts, and some wrenches. The MOST critical part is that the clutch centering tool is the correct one. And something that you should be prepared to deal with is the removal of the bearing at the crankshaft. It's a real ***** to get it out. There are many tricks for that, but most of the time, it has to be taken out in pieces. Remember to change the rear engine seal, it's a sure leaker, and probably is what killed your clutch.
When it's time to put the tranny back, some wiggling and pushing may be needed to push it into the clutch splines. It's a tedious work, but you learn a lot. And don't forget to wash everything and paint them. Working with greasy parts is a miserable feeling. I do it like that on my cars and my friend's cars too, when they help, that is. lol

 

I haven't yet. Yet. I beat the II with my car with a passenger and bad tires. Bad enough that one blew out the same night.

 

Arin agreed to help me work on the clutch, and my dad has done one before, so I think we'll be alright. I'm just scared of the pilot bearing, and the throw out bearing. Other than that, I'm fairly content with the clutch replacement.

 

SSShhiiiiiiiTTTTTTT! It appears that there's a curse for blown clutches, **** it all! My brother called me yesterday that his car didn't move, but the gears engaged and all. Now I have to help him get out the tranny of his 98 Tercel. Luckily that car is very easy to work with, lots of space to move wrenches and hands arround. I almost had it on the ground, just three or four bolts left to remove, but it was getting late, and my back wasn't helping much, but the workout wasn't that bad at all! Guess that I missed wrenching that bad lol.

 

The one time we had a blown clutch in my truck, it had been giving warning signs for a while, being quite difficult to engage any gears, it had to be on the floor to start the car, etc. What kind of clutch are you going to get? If you can get the money, a great clutch is a world of difference, and since you probably wont have the transmission seperated any other time, this would be a great time to do it.

I understand the religious bit. My uncle swung by tonight and told me he's done "hundreds" of clutches. So I'm pretty confident. Good luck though Arin. I know how parents can be sometimes.
