Sounds like your "light off" catalytic converter is stopped up.....I've seen this many times on V6's with over 100k. I think there is a O2 sensor in that converter, if so pull it and see if you car runs better (it will be LOUD).

I would definently change all the fluids and probably put new plugs and wires and a new distributor on it

those disappeared off the mustang with the 5.0L after 95. He could check/replace the coil though if he's still got any misfires after changing plugs and wires
