Polk MMC570 vs Alpine Type-R
I am trying to decide between the Alpine Type-R SPR-57LP 5x7" speakers all around or the Polk/MOMO MMC570 5x7" all around.
The alpines are $150 and the polks are $170 on crutchfield, and I have read good things about both. I have a JVC Arsenal KD-AR860 reciever, and I plan to eventually get a 4 channel amp for the speakers and dual 12" subs with another amp.
Opinions?

Opinions: Keep as much of your stuff the same brand as possible.
I have no experience w/ Alpine products, just never liked their head units. But Polk has never let me down. I had one of their db series subs a few years back. It was absolutley amazing. One of the best built woofers I've seen, and it provided very accurate bass. Their mid's and highs have always been accurate as well. Me, I'd go w/ Polk, but that's mainly due to loyalty.
Hope that helps.

I LOVE my Polk Audio speakers. I have set of MMC6500 (6.5" component speakers with 1" silk dome tweeter) in my truck and absolutely love them. And I have a brand new in the box set of MMC6500 that will be installed in the doors as soon as I actually have time...
Also, I have come to the general conclusion that there is a pretty good rule of thumb to follow: If a company is know as a headunit company, don't expect their speakers to be top dog. If they are known as a speaker company, don't expect their head units/amps to be top dog either. This rule has served me well for many years... I might have to change it in the future, but I think it is still sound for now.

Sorry to disagree with you John, but I love Alpine. I will be putting in their new CDA-9855 this next month. It is single DIN though.
For speakers, I would reccomend MB Quart. Their Reference series (lowest) would darf both Alpine or Polk (imo).
Alpine is known for their amps and head units. I know polk and mb quart are known for their speakers. A buddy of mine has the Alpine 5x7's powered by an alpine 4 chann...off an Alpine HU....and it sounds incredible.
I would go to a stereo shop and listen. Every speaker brand has a different tone to it.

Surfn, no problem. Like I said, I've never owned one. I know they have a great reputation, and a lot of people are Alpine die-hards. I just always found their head units a little to 'busy' to operate.
I guess that's why I'm keeping my stock head unit and using a LOC. I'm sure a lot of people think that's crazy.

I've got the stock HU driving 4 Infinity Kappa 5x7s. The infinity speakers are a little lacking on the low end, but they are superb for the mids and highs (they can still shake my door panels though). For the lows I put in the Infinity powered sub, it gives me plenty of sound for what I need it for.
Personally, I've always liked Infinity, Bose, Boston Acoustics, and Polk. I haven't heard MB Quarts yet, but I don't know anyone willing to put out the cash for those.

Well, I wanted the BEST 5x7s money could buy, and came close to getting the polks, but I wasnt sure if they would fit all the way around, so I ordered the 2005 model alpine type R speakers (2 pairs), new, unopened off ebay, $200 shipped. Thats not too bad considering my local shop wanted $180 a pair and crutchfield wants $170 a pair. Ant Todd said he has his all the way around so these should fit with no probs. I plan to add an amp for the alpines, and 2 JL 12W1 subs in the near future.
SurfNSoCal,
Bro! I have to call you on the MB Quart! vs. the Polks MMC line! THe Quart absolutely ROCK!!!! Unless you have excellent high frequency hearing (like me). Then that beautiful 1" titanium dome tweeter just gets HARSH at high frequencies and higher listening levels. The MMCs 1" silk dome tweeter plays just as clear, but it never gets harsh at all.
But the MB Quart woofers KICK BUTT! I had a set of CX218's (6.5 driver and that 1" titanium dome tweeter) in my college car about 14 years ago. I loved it, even with the harsh highs and they stayed in that car for over 5 years. My sister has a full set of MB Quart component speakers in her '96 T-Bird (at my recommendation), so you can NOT say I have a bias against Quart or haven't listened to them long term.
It was just after listening to the MMC6500 and then installing a set in my pickup (driven by a Phoenix Gold Octane R8.4.0 75w x 4 rms amp biamped), I fairly quickly came to the conclusion that the Polks just sounded better and the NEVER became harsh. I was NOT expecting to come to that conclusion to tell you the truth...
