Just curious, what do you like better about the Honda button?
It's bigger for one thing, it will perfectly fill the entire recessed area of the plug. The face of the button isn't a cheap looking transparent plastic. The Honda button is a solid bright red with semi-transparent white lettering. I dunno I think it just looks nicer when you put the two side by side. I'm not knocking yours, because I got all tingly when I saw yours installed.

Thanks to Webba's suggestion I got a Uni Bit that goes up to 1.25" so the hole cutting will be easier. Thanks Webba!

Dustin, Where did you get the Honda button and do you have a pic? I did buy the Ignighted one and not crazy about the fact it no has "Ignighted" written on it. I haven't installed it yet.

I did it!!! Works great, first try it worked. Here's a pic

[attachmentid=19561]

I took pics step by step but they're on my dad's camera and he took it to work just now.

Looks good huh? It looks like it came with the car. The button diameter is almost exactly the same as the recessed area. I'll do a writeup tonight, right now it's back to Zaino.

I bought it at the local Honda dealer. You can find better deals online but I didn't know if this was going to work so I got it local so I could return it if I had to. I paid $57 for it at the dealer. It's much cheaper online

You can buy it cheap here:

The Honda button is a solid bright red with semi-transparent white lettering.
When you get that bad boy installed, I need closeup pictures of both day and night with the lights so I can see how it works. From what I can tell it will look hot.

This is what you see when you just turn the key to on, no lights

Very, very, very nice. My only question now is....would you ever find yourself missing the power port?

Personally for me it wouldn't be an issue. I don't smoke and I don't have anything that needs that jack, because I hardwire anything that would normally go there.

Again, real sweet job - looking forward to your complete writeup.

DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IN ANY WAY FOR ANY DAMAGE YOU MIGHT DO TO YOUR CAR, SELF, OR ANYONE ELSE. FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS AT YOUR OWN RISK. YOU MUST HAVE SOME BASIC ELECTRICAL KNOWLEDGE TO DO THIS, IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBTS, DON'T TRY DOING THIS.

So anyway here's the writeup as promised. I followed John's instructions for his start button but I'll go into a little more detail on the parts I did differently. Beware this is what you are getting yourself into.

[attachmentid=19638]

BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING REMOVE THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL FROM YOUR BATTERY!!!

To start off you need to remove the lower cover of the steering column. There's 3 screws holding it in.

[attachmentid=19639]

The green wire is covered in electrical tape, you need to remove the tape to find the wire. Instead of soldering the connection I used is a 3M T-Tap Quick Disconnect Terminal (18-14 AWG, color: blue, McMaster Carr Part number 69515K24). You just slightly strip the insulation away like this:

Then you snap the connector on. Later on you will attach the wire to an insulated spade connector and plug it into this.

[attachmentid=19642]

Pick up a mini fuse add a line at Pepboys and follow its instuctions. I plugged it into socket 17 (refer to car manual) and used a 3 AMP fuse like John described. I apologize for the crappy picture.

[attachmentid=19644]

Remove all the molding around the fuse box. On the fuse box cover I cut a slot with a dremel for the wire to stick out of.

I picked up a Honda S2000 Start button from a local Honda dealer for $57. You can find them online cheaper here: http://www.handa-accessories.com/s2000-04.html

I got my inspiration from this page here: http://www.miata.net/garage/pushstart/

The back of the start button has 5 prongs.

[attachmentid=19647]

I followed the diagram from http://www.miata.net/garage/pushstart/

[attachmentid=19648]

Instead of cutting and soldering wires I went through some old computer junk and found an 8 prong harness. I cut 3 of the connectors off and it fit perfectly. You might be able to find something like this at an electronics surplus shop. I labeled my wires following the diagram and crimped the leads to some 3 conductor wire I had.

Next follow the links to .PDFs in John's post to remove the center console and center instrument panel. Remove the lighter socket and adapter. Open the hole up with a dremel and cut little slots for the ribs on the start button. Try not to remove more material than you need.

[attachmentid=19653]

When you are done it should fit snug. Mine does.

[attachmentid=19654]

[attachmentid=19655]

Put the harness in the dash, running your wires to the ignition and fuse box. I have to warn you that the start button will not come with the internal light on. You need to take the bulb out of it and remove the brown cover over the light bulb. Only do this if you want it to light up. It's your choice. Then hook the start button back to the harness. I wouldn't put the console back together until you know it works. Better yet I would probably test the button to make sure it worked before I dremeled the hole in the center console. That's the way I did it.

Hook the output wire up to the ignition with a crimp on insulated spade connector

[attachmentid=19657]

Then on your second wire, crimp the power input wire to the fuse connection. Crimp the ground wire to a crimped eye loop and attach it to the screw shown below.

[attachmentid=19656]

Reconnect the negative terminal to the battery. Turn the key to on and press the start button, it should start. I wouldn't worry about using a relay because I metered the ignition wire and I read exactly 1 amp, the button itself should be able to handle it. If it works, put everything back together, and you have a cool little toy.

A little video demonstration is in order

I've had mine in for a while now and haven't missed it yet. I don't smoke cigarettes, and cigars in a car like this would be a sin. There's still a powerpoint in the center console if you decide to plug in a car charger for a cell, etc. Besides, the button looks a lot better than that stupid cover that comes with the car, and ten times better than a hole right in the middle of your dashboard.

John did you notice that underneath the center console there was already a plug for a second power port?

If you're talking what I'm thinking about, I believe that plug is for people who have the auto tranny. I think that plug is what supplies the lights, etc, for the automatic gearshift. Am I wrong or did you notice something else?

Thanks for the great install and pics. I took the install and pics and put them into a word doc so I could print it out as a reference. I have it here as a webpage and word doc if anyone else would like it.

you're still missing some critical info from John's post, like PDFs for console disassembly and the pictures in post #2
