I'm going to order some door sill inserts, but need some opinions on which ones are the best. So far I've found these, but can't make up my mind. Or maybe there are others that are better.

I got mine at ninosport for 27.95 including shipping. I will eventually paint them in, but the vinyl looks great from further than 2 feet.

 

I heard about putting vasoline on the surface then scraping away with a q-tip the part you want painted. Anyone else heard of this method???

As opposed to taping off.

 

Just so you are aware both of those kits are just Vinyl lettering that you put inside the door sills that you already have.
If you already knew that then go with either one since they are the exact same price just different sellers.
I just bought some vinyl products from Bob's last week and am waiting for them to arrive

 

Never heard of it but I would think that just scraping away what you want to paint with the Q tip would still leave vasoline residue and the paint wouldnt stick well but not sure. Youd have to be real careful cleaning it out with some alchohol or something. I am planning on machining a set of my own and haveing the "Mustang" powder coated by a plater down the road from me. If my car ever gets here Ill post pics when I get done.

 

just got my sill plate inserts in and put'em on. They can be a lil touchey I actually used a pair of tweezers.

 

oh and forgot to put in that I got them from Bob White decal.

Dan the other thing that I forgot to add was that Bob White Decal gave us four sets of Sill inserts just incase you do screw up. With some steady hands and patience they came out pretty nice IMO, and really do make a difference

amazingly no. It did take alot of patience though with some steady hands. the M's and S's can be pretty tricky on both sides

 

Maybe I'm a bit slow....are these decal kits 'sill plates' or just lettering. And do the lettering inserts come with the 3 bars on each side?

I'm wanting to just paint in the lettering and the bars. No sill plate. What kind of paint? Will it hold up to a lot of sand? Should I attempt it - or will it end up looking half-hiney.

 

FYI for those using decals on this or decals in general. There is a product made for the sign industry called "Rapid Tac" for help in placing decals on. Basically it is a solution you spray on the area to be decaled and then place the decal on. It has alot of alchohol in it so it evaporates. It allows you to move the decal around and align where you want it. Once you do that you squeege out the liquid and air bubbles from under the decal and viola it is in place. It helps you not to stretch or tear the vinyl. I dont know where to get it these days as I have been out of the sign supply business for about 8 years but I am sure if you do a search online you can find a supplier. We recently did a job where we had to place like 10,000 decals on a circuit board enclosure and we had a local chemical company mix us some up. he sells it in large volumes. It works great. I have also heard soe of the old timers in the sign business use soap and water however I have never personally tried it so try it on something you dont care about first. I dont know how it would work without the alchohol to evaporate. Hope this helps

 

the kit just includes the MUSTANG decals to be inserted. I had thought about putting a pin striping in the 3 bars on each side but when I tried they didnt stick so if I come up with something I will let you know.
I have seen a few people paint their sill plates, but in the end its totally up to you. I try to go with things alittle less permanent just in case I do screw up or end up not liking something.
