Well I was going to have it added at dealer, but they wanted like 500.00 total installed. I said that's ok. I added bluetooth cell kit instead and wheel locks, and ashtray kit. 500 for a mirror with some gadgets, you must be crazy.

I'm thinking about getting the bluetooth cell kit. Which phone do you have? Any problems with voicedial (if your phone has it)?

A previous poster said not to bother since the phones features don't all work with bluetooth.

I am interested in getting the mirror with the homelink and use the homelink for the garage door opener. My opener is the old type where you actually have to manually set about 10 switches (+ 0 -) on the remotes to be identical to the opener settings.

Will the Homelink work with this older technology or would I have to replace the garage door opener.

Boy, that's a dedicated Mustang owner - he'll mod the house if he has to.

Now that's funny!

To answer the original question, the Homelink system in my Mazda "learned" from the garage opener remote. You have to put the Homelink system in learn mode then use the remote and it picks up what the remote is doing. I would imagine it could learn from your older remotes as well. How old are your remotes? Mine are about 13 years old and I had no problem.

Peet and Martimus are both correct...the Subaru "WRX" mirror is a different mirror than the "Legacy/Outback" mirror which is identical to the Ford mirror and the Mazda mirror (pictured above). The best price is through Subaru (thanks Peet - I owe you a cold one for that link). Mine is working perfectly and thanks again Peet for pointing out that the solid black "+" wire is for the reverse circuit auto dimming function shut off....at first I had this connected to an "always hot" fuse like the instructions call for - but the dim feature of the mirror wouldn't work (Martimus I suspect this may have been why your 1st mirror was defective) now that I have disconnected this wire - all the functions of the mirror work!!! Very happy with the results and am very pleased that I only paid the Subaru price for it!!

No one should pay to have this mirror installed....it really is a 45 minute job and I'd be more than happy to answer any questions about it - just PM me!! You really can do this with just popping off the map light housing cover and drilling a ground hole under there and running the black/white "hot" wire down the passenger "A" pillar to the kick panel fuse box.

Great mod!!

The only diff on the newer garage door units (I have one) is that they have the "rolling code" feature and you have to press a button on the rear of the garage door head unit to program....these steps are included in the "Home Link" programing instructions included with the mirror......older units you do not have to do this step and can program with just the remote opener and the mirror.

Thanks Mark and Brad. That is exactly what I was hoping for. My remotes are about 10 years old.

The mirror was going to be one of my first mods.

You're welcome! Wherever you buy it from (Ford, Subaru, or Mazda), it's a nice mod and very convenient. I have it in my Mazda and will definitely add it to my Mustang (when I finally buy one).

Did you have any problem getting the mirror off its mounting on the windshield? I've heard that you have to be real careful so as not to break the glass.
ALso, how hard is it to get the trim off the A-pillar?

Does the Subaru mirror have a temperature readout? Didn't mention it on the website.

When I removed mine I just took a mini screwdriver with a flat blade and inserted it in the opening at the bottom of the OEM mirror. I pulled the handle of the screwdriver towards me VERY GENTLY till I could feel that the base of the mirror was away from the glass. I then applied GENTLE upward pressure to the base of the mirror. After about 4 or 5 attempts the mirror slid up and off the base. I also heard the horror stories about dealers breaking windows removing the mirror so I tried to do everything slowly and VERY carefully.

In terms of the trim it simply snaps in and pulls off. Where I found challenges was that sometimes the snaps just did not want to go back in (I've installed/removed the trim about 5 times already). All I did at that point was play with it till it finally slipped back into place.

Hey guys, I bought this auto-dimming mirror w/compass/temp and plan to install it this weekend, I can do a how-to if anyone is interested.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...TRK%3AMEWA%3AIT

It is cheaper than Ford and I like the setup, he has many more like this and the bidding ends around $155.00 usually. So again, if anyone is interested in a how-to, i will be glad to do it.

FYI - the mirror I was speaking of (and the others in the first part of this thread) have a homelink garage door opener built in. $190 for a homelink mirror with compass, or $177.50 for one that doesn't is a no brainer for me anyhow. Unless you like having a garage door opener hanging on your visor that is

Beyond that, one word of caution - the electrochromic process seems to be 'owned'/licensed by Donnelly and Gentex. This ebay mirror is a Taiwanese knock-off. Caveat Emptor.

Well, actually, I DON'T care about the Homelink. The garage door opener on my visor doesn't bother me, and I also own a Harley, so I like being able to take the opener out of my car and carry it in my pocket. On the other hand, the other mirrors don't seem to have a temperature readout. Since I live in Florida, I like to know just how hot it is outside when I'm running the AC in my car. My wife's G6 has an exterior temp readout in the radio controls, and when I'm driving that car I find mysef checking it every so often.
Point taken about the unknown manufacturer brand, though.

The Gentex mirrors do have an option for displaying temperature. The temp is displayed in the same little box on the top right of the mirror. To get temperature, however, you have to run an external probe through the firewall and, if I remember correctly, to a location on the front bumper.

I can certainly appreciate your desire to know what the temp is outside the car. On the other hand I live in central Arizona and I really DO NOT want to know how !@##$%^ hot it is in mid-July!
