For people that added the Subaru mirror did you have a problem with the plastic part
from the mirror to the roof being too short? Any fix?

[attachmentid=22188]
That part is adjustable, just slide it apart to extend it to proper length.
Thats the way mine came in the box

When you do that, it fits perfectly!

Why not use the map light as a power source or do you think the current draw would run the battery down? I plan to go there for my radar detector hook up.
Do you think it will have enough juice from there to power the Radar detector?
I want to do the same thing. How do you get the map light housing from the ceiling and is there a ground in there? I am sooo ignorant with electricity.

The rumor I heard (and I have no first hand experience with this) is that the map light circuit won't support tapping into this for a grounded circuit.

The map light housing just pulls straight down - there's a clip on either side. I found it easier to pull one side first and then do the other.

Go back and read my post #98. You can't use the map light circuit for a simple tap for a grounded item as it will cause your map lights to stay on all the time. Any item that requires a hot side plus ground needs a tap off the fuse box.

If you do run a separate hot line up there you'll have to drill your own ground point. That's not a problem as there is an inner shell you can drill into and not hurt the car top skin.

Doh! :bang:

Thank you.

Maybe you should work for Subaru?

...or better yet, maybe I'm not that bright, I missed the easy part of the mod....

Installed my new auto-dimming mirror yesterday. It was a breeze. I got the Subaru mirror because I was just looking to get it for the Homelink. If you don't mind not having the temp, that is the way to go. Ran both wires down to the fuse panel and ran power to wiper circuit and ground to the nut just below the fuse panel. It goes to chassis. No drilling required. Thanks for all the post, it really helped me to decide which mirror to get.

I picked one up today off ebay for $27. No compass or temp or homelink but the price is right.

Hey guys,
Sorry to drudge his thread up from its dormancy, but I have a question.

Do the mirror kits listed come with the bracket/conduit (square tube lookin thing) that goes up the window to the roof? Can the people who purchased the different kits (Ford, Subaru, Mazda) let me (us) know what each kit comes with?

Thank you in advance

Who needs Homelink? I'm getting the same one JHL981 installed. Should be here Monday. It has an outside UV measurement option, so I can estimate how quick I'll be getting skin cancer from never driving my 'vert with the top up

Yes they come with the little telescoping channels that run from the base of the mirror to the head liner. When I first attempted to install a Subaru kit I found that channel was almost too short to get from the mirror to the headliner. After I returned it and got the Ford mirror I found that the channel was twice the size and fit perfectly between the mirror base and the head liner.

FYI...picked up a dimming/compass combo mirror at the local junk yard, from a 2001 Crown Vic, complete wiring harness included, 25.00. Super easy install, ground speaks for itself, hot to "switched" power (used radio circuit) then second power to back-up light circuit, to cancel auto-dim when in reverse. This hook-up not necessary, but still simple. A great improvement. For those spending more than 50.00 for their mirrors, look in the junk yards, these are a very common item in high end cars and trucks. Since I sold my 73 Mustang, need a reason to hit the yards, and the mirror was a good reason! Good luck and happy hunting!

The electrical connection runs down the passenger side 'A' pillar and into the box on that side. I have them on all my FoMoCo cars - I like it. Live goes on without them as well.

Yeah, the Exon Science unit has a UV sensor feature (the external sensor itself is a $15 option. It's built into a bolt intended to attach the license plate) On the mirror, you get a little color coded UV bar graph in the display (which can be switched on/off)

I LOVE this mirror... the dimming ranges from a light sky blue to a deep navy depending on the glare from behind, and it doesn't affect the sharpness of the reflection like the green tint mirrors I've had in other cars.

I also like the fact that everything behind me looks like it's blue shifted (the amateur Physicists and astronomers in the audience will get that one )

Just ordered the Ford 4L3Z-17700-B Homelink auto-dimming mirror with compass & temp. display. Also had the dealer print the latest install instructions. I scanned them into Adobe and can email them to anyone that might need them - 19 pages (600K).
