Where are the lighted door sills from? Are they a take-off part from a 2010-2014, or are they a Ford accessory item? If the later, it won't work.
And since you have a 2006, you don't have ambient lighting? You will need to get the upper console that has the spot to put the switch in. You also need the control box. And if you are willing to do that much, you might as well put in ambient lighting.
But to answer your question, the switch is wired to a control box located underneath the cupholders. I would take this to mean that it will not work without that module that is part of the ambient lighting system.

there for the 2005 n up.there not a ford accesory item. im gonna mount switch inside console . since the sill plates have a wire for each color you choose without ambient i figured i could wire into the multi switch..wouldnt this allow to switch color to color? besides hooking right into the entry lamps..i was trying to find a diagram of the pins to see which pin is which in the switch

my thought was to run a wire from black|blue map light wire to power on switch pin and the color wires from sill plates to distrbution pins on multi switch.does it sound like would work?

Regardless, you will still need the ambient lighting module. Won't work without it.
You would then have to get the schemetics for what pin is for what on the plug ins in the module as well as the switch as you stated. I think I posted the schematics in the ambient lighting retrofit thread stickied in this section.
The switch itself cannot toggle through the different colours. It only sends a signal to the ambient lighting module, which keeps track of how many times the button had been pressed and then sends the signal out to the LED lights.

It would have to be custom. Why not consider putting in ambient lighting? I have done it, and will actually in the future do as you are suggesting - tie in the door sills to the ambient lighting.
Merry Christmas.

I would think a rotary switch would work....one with specific positions like a fan speed switch, not a resistor type, as long as there is not a need for reduced power to the lights.

I have the ambient lighting added to my 07 and I had my sill plates tied into it. It works fine, but it doesn't come on when you open the door. I decided to go back to a single, on when the door opens, sill plate color. I like that better at this time, but once I decide to make the console come on when the doors are unlocked (summer), then I'll rewire back to the ambient controller. I am powered by the center console plug by the shifter, so that is a hot wire constant. It would be better to wire to the door switches, but that will have to wait for warmer weather. I enjoy my ambient lighting. I also added 2 front lights to the console, to shine down on the footwells. I didn't want the under dash lights quite so bright as the factory design. This puts out the perfect amount of light now.
