OK, then! We are onto something! So now we need to hook up an amplifier somehow? Maybe after market would do?

That sounds encouraging. I could definitely add a separate amp with 4chanels.

The 09 Escape does have a separate amplifier part as well.

If ford makes the amplifier for the escape, then it might help to eliminate a complete change over and harness modification.

That would explain why the volume problem persisted in the father-in-law's Escape when I installed it.

Fords new radio system will be built by Xanavi. They are the systems that are installed in Nissan and radios/gps are sold in the U.S.A.

Did you happen to see the labels on the radio that you attempted to install.

Maybe that is what the extra small square connector port is for...an amplifier.
The 2009 units have built in Siruis apparently, and the yellow SAT antenna connector would be for that, the pink for Nav. (I think)

Unhappy

From reading some of the information from Xanavia, it looks like they have joined forces with Sony. They also make the Eclipse radio systems that are currently available.
If you look at the ford Flex and the Escape it shows the radios that are installed at the factory.
Unfortunately this new generation system will not be available for the Mustangs until the 2010 Mustangs are released.

Working on the same thing...

I have an 07 Freestyle and I'm working on the same conversion, plus adding the Taurus X type Rear DVD system. The Mustang and The Taurus X are both getting carry over Nav units from 08 to 09, but the Taurus X does have Sync from the factory.

I have the Nav headunit from an 09 SuperDuty and the rear DVD unit from a 08 Expedition. I'm looking to get the Sync Kit and wire all of this up (and you thought doing one would be hard). I also have the 07-08 and 09-10 Service Manual DVDs (Wiring Schematics) coming to work on all of this.

If I come across a solution that might help with the Mustang I'll let all of you know. I'm planning to make an adapter harness to plug into the factory one, so I don't have to hack it to pieces (in case this doesn't work). The other interesting part to the headunit is it also integrates with the Climate Control system, if programmed of it. If you look at some of the pictures on the Escape and the F150 you can see the dual climate control and the exterior temp.

Sorry if its a bit off topic, but Freestyle is a stepchild online and there isn't any good place for information on these Nav units yet.

Thanks.

If it helps to fit in, I do have a 65 Convertible. Not that its much to look at right now. I have the 07-08 Service DVD now. I won't have anything about the new Nav Unit unit I get the 09-10 DVD. Should be here next week. Thanks for the welcome!

Nice, I cant wait. Put me on the list for one of those adapters when you make them.

It will save me from buying a pioneer unit.

OK- I can confirm that the Escape will have a muted volume on the new Nav unit. There isn't an amplifier in the 09 NAV headunit. I have an 08 Escape and put my NAV in it to beta test the connections and the functionality. Things of note:

C240A (24PIN) - Primary Connections with line level out to amplifier and power
C240B (10PIN) - Backup Camera connection ONLY 2 pins used
C240C (16PIN) - Medium Speed CAN network and Sync/SAT connection
C240D (8PIN) - Connection for SUB/THX

*Observations*
The new head unit did a couple of things inorder to get all the tech into the double DIN space. They elliminated the 6 disk changer/DVD nav reader and repalced it with a single CD/DVD reader. They integrated the Satellite Tuner for the added Travel Link fuctionality. Inorder to get that into the head unit, they had to remove the amplifier because of space/heat. They used the remained of the 40GB headunit hard drive that is integrated for Navigation data for ripping CDs to the disk. It *MIGHT* be possible to copy the drive to a larger disk to get more CD space. Also changing to a solid state disk would help access times and longevity. This will be a rev two investigation.

The Expedition uses a splitter cable for the SAT/GPS antenna using the factory under dash location. So you don't have to run an extra connection.

*Concerns*
MS-CAN
HS-CAN
Steering wheel buttons

These items involve connectivity to the other programmed modules in the car. If the modules in your vehicle aren't programmed to output the required information to the headunit you will lose fuctionality. Example: If you look at the screen shots of a Flex/F150/Expedition/Escape, they have external temp/internal cliamte settings displaying on the screen. If your HVAC controls aren't set to output that information you won't see that on the screen. The steering wheel buttons appear to be somewhat different from year to year. It is unknown if they have the same resistance and will fuction easily. There could be other module connectivity that is required and might not work.

I'm not warranting any of this information.

Awesome info. In the mustang we don't have to worry about the steering wheel buttons and hvac. We don't have any of that stuff. Your tempting me to buy one and some amps. You guys are killing me.

Any news on sync integration? Is it a module that plugs into the head unit? Info?

If you were to get the 09 Nav and either the factory amplifier or a aftermarket one you could wire it all up with an adapter wiring harness with the amplifier wired inbetween the factory harness and the head unit. I would try to get the Mustang Sync kit for your car even if your existing head unit won't support it. I'll look at the Schematics for the 07 and 09 mustang to see if there is a significant difference.

If you get the Sync kit connect it like this:

Factory Harness ---> Sync Harness---> Adapter Harness ---> Headunit

Since the 09 Mustang doesn't use the new Nav at the factory the Sync kit is expected to connect to a head unit with an integrated amplifier.

This is all very confusing. The 09 NAV units I've seen are advertised as 6 CD. (Pioneer made version)
also have separate NAV and SAT radio antenna connections

Is it the case that all of the '09 Nav units do not have a built in amp, or just the Escape unit?

This is a little off topic, but do any of you know if the followin part is the right gps antenna for both the old and new style nav units?
