2009 Ford Nav - is it different?

I noticed that the 2009 Escape has a slightly different nav than the 2006-08. The tune buttons opposite the volume/power is replaced with a ****. But what I really noticed is that this unit has more features to it - like the ability to download pictures to use as screen savers, and 3D navigation. The new interface is slick, too. It has 10 gig hard drive - seems similar in features to the mygig from Chrysler, but looks pretty much like the old pioneer nav.

Does the 2009 Mustang have this nav? Anyone know if 05 - 06 cars could be compatible with it?

Last time I checked the order guide at work, it didn't mention the new updated navigation system as a new feature. I think they are using up all the current-gen systems for the 2009s and when the new 2010 car is ready for production, then this unit gets the nod. Plus, another reason its not used, is this new nav unit above is encorporated with SYNC, and since the 2010 gets it, that also leads me to believe we'll see it in that car! Now, thats not to say we couln't figure out a way to get one reprogrammed to work with our 2005-2009 cars. Lets hope.

as per the 2009 brochure the sync system is a DEALER installed option on the mustang. if you want something bad enough, you can make it happen...

Not really... I spent a YEAR trying to get a 2007 NAV to work in my Pony to no avail.

I wouldn't gamble $2000 again to try the 2009 version... It's pure !!!!

I would love to have that but I doubt if it would work.

Other than the speed signal error, what did you have a problem with on the nav system install? I have helped several folks get them working in 2005+ cars. The S1000 cars take some work, wiring must be modified as the nav units cannot drive them as factory wired.

I am really tempted to get an 09 off ebay and try it out. I suppose if it won't work, I can always try selling back on ebay. Just waiting for one at a price I'm willing to pay for. They are SYNC ready

It looks to have all the same functions as the unit out of the Flex, despite the Flex unit having a larger screen and separate buttons.

OK, I bought one, and it is on its way. It was out of an 09 Escape. I'll need satelite radio for the extra features to work. I'll posted when it arrives and I've tested it. If it doesn't work, my father-in-law will take it for his Escape, so I have an out at least,

Cheers

09' Nav system

I have a 2005 Mustang and have been reading the threads and shopping ebay for the hardware. I'm also interested in seeing if the 2009 Nav will work on the '05 stang. I'll be following along to hear how you make out.

My Shaker 1000 NEVER worked with the NAV unit, despite three different programmers and KC's best efforts. (He took care of me like a champ! What a great guy!!!)

Finally after a year I gave up. Without the Shaker 1000 working it sounded like an 80's vintage Kraco POS car stereo from Trak Auto (remember them?). Even the door mounted subs sounded over-biased and scratchy/tinny. TERRIBLE.

The speed error I could live with, the loss of the Shaker 1000 was the deal-breaker for me.

I would never consider an OEM SatNav in any car, especially when you consider that they tend to be a $1500-$2000 optional extra...
I just use a stand-alone SatNav made by the Dutch firm Tom-Tom and it never lets me down. Voted best Nav device in practically every Western European country for the past three years running.
I get automatic updates via my PC: map corrections; traffic info (constantly updated via bluetooth connection to cell-phone); weather and most important for me: speed-camera warnings (legal to buy in UK but not in Germany...but I still use it...lol). All for $400 and a $25 yearly subscription.
Plus I can even design my own map colours to match the car instrument colours...how cool is that?
With the new ones you can even use it to keep track of other Tom-Tom users providing you input their device details first. So if a group of you are going on a run, you can see where the others are relative to you.

I tried out the SatNav in the new BMW 335i M-Sport coupe when I tested it before buying the Mustang and to be honest, it was rubbish. Hard to see with a map that wasn't as clear as the Tom-Tom and quite often took me down routes I knew to be wrong. Like half-way over a bridge it told me to turn left...hmmmm

Javier,

I was just looking at the rear connectors on the 2009 model versus the previous one. It looks like it's all the same except for one additional connector on the new model. Do you have any idea what this is for? Maybe for the USB port for SYNC and/or microphone for voice commands?

Until it arrives and I put it in, I can't say - Sync maybe? Once it comes in, I will compare to my father-in-law's and se for sure.

Unhappy

OK, good news and bad...

I got it today and all functions work - it has quite a few features, but:

1) The mounting bracket isn't right, and it sticks out too far and too low. Easy to fix, if your determined.

2) The buttons glow blue - if you do Deric's LED mod, not a big problem either.

3) Cranked at maximum, the volume sounds like it is muted. Not configured for the shaker 500, I guess. This is THE problem I don't know how to get around. I went through the menu and everything else I could toggle through - sound settings etc... - but couldn't fix it.

It has lots of cool functions, though:
upload your own pictures for it to cycle through instead of the Ford symbol all the time.
movie listings
gas prices
sports updates
weather map
5 day weather forcast
no nav disc - updated through sat radio
sync ready
3D mapping

And that is just what I had time to figure out (No instructions came with it.). But the speaker/volume problem is not what I anticipated. My father-in-law will buy the unit off me for his Escape, but until someone can solve the speaker/volume problem - don't bother.

Sorry .

I looked at all the trouble guys went through to retrofit nav systems in their cars, My conclusion is that the pioneer f-series is the closest we will get to retrofiting a fully sync & nav in the 05-09 stangs. The f-series can also be hacked to run different software for nav and other features.

As for the unit being capable, I have no doubt in my mind that it can be done with a combination of time+money. The way I see it is we need a wiring harness that converts the older bus from the stang to the newer unit. The chrystlers have their lock pick harnesses that can be used, but they were created by third party who basically hacked the wiring and made an adapter. What we would need is a wiring diagram for both vehicle and stock nav from the stang and compare it to the wiring diagram from the escape + nav. Take it from there. Any takers? Wont be easy.

It probably could be programmed, but unlike the other unit which was offered for our cars and had programming for it, this unit is not offered, so there is no programming. Someone would have to hack it. I know of someone looking into it, but I wouldn't cross your fingers.
