2009 Ford Nav - is it different?
Interesting that it wouldn't power up in you r Explorer. It did power up in my 05 Mustang, and everything worked fine except the volume issue and the nav/weather/fuel prices etc... The later didn't work because I needed Sirius to upload all that, which I don't have - easy fix on that, I'd guess.
Interesting note, however, today I plugged it into my father-in-law's 09 Escape (this nav is from another 09 Escape) and I had the exact same problems as what was in my Mustang. Sound was coming from the speakers, but really muted. And he does have Sirius, but the unit still wouldn't update as it didn't detect SDARS antennae. Obviously programming is needed - this may work yet, but it is beyond me know to figure it out. My unit is going back on Ebay. Was cool playing with it in the meantime.
Cheers

So, maybe you guys can shed some light on this. I spoke to my local dealership to get some information. I asked for a quote to purchase a navigation sstem for my '05 mustang from them. When they quoted me, they asked if I wanted SYNC and gave me two prices, only about $100 apart for with and without SYNC. From what I've seen there is a dealer add-on option for SYNC available but it specifically states it is not compatible with vehicles that have a nav system. So, is the price they quoted me for the nav with SYNC for this '09 Escape style nav? I'm going to ask them more questions to find out. But, if anyone has insight, let me know. This may help us narrow down whether the 09' Escape Style nav can be programmed for out '05 to '08 Mustangs.

The nav that does go in our cars:
uses a nav disk
has satelite radio
audio input
navigation
radio
6 CD player.
The Escape nav has all that plus:
10 gig hard drive
Travel Link
3D mapping with icons
Fuel pricing
movie listings
sports updates
weather mapping and 7 day forecast
customizable sreen savers
SYNC compatible
Blue Tooth (I think - it has phone functions)
buttons glow light blue - not puke green as in our cars.
I am selling mine now, as I do not want to be the pioneer in figuring out how to program it. If someone else gets it working, I may try this again.

Just saw that Chicago Parts and Sound is NOT programming at this time for the 2009 units. Sounds like they are working on it.

Fyi, As Per Conversation with my Radio {not Nav} Guru The 09 Radio's operate at a Lower Output Level Than Prior Models. So Volume output is not a Programming but a Design Issue. So I am told! 10's will have the Same Issue as well.

This nav had the same volume problem when I hooked it up to an 09 Escape (the 09 has this very nav as an option) as in my Mustang. The error codes showed that it didn't recognize the speakers.

I spoke to Radios&More today, and Ron told me he could not see any difference between the 2008 and 2009 navigation radio installed by the factory for mustang. The only change would only be an updated radio program.
From a programming point of view, I can't say, but physically they are different front and back.
The 1st 2 are the 05 - 08 nav, while the 2nd 2 is the 09 nav available in the 09 Escape and other 09 vehicles (except Mustang!):

Yes, you are right. This nav is not available on the Mustang. But I can say that everything seems to be fine except for volume. At least when I put it in my 05.

I think that ford is just going to continue with the old version in the Mustang for 2009.
Ralph,
They quoted me $2,090 plus tax w/o SYNC and $2,200 plus tax w/ SYNC. I called back to ask some more specific questions and they guy at the dealership who quoted me didn't know much about these navigations units. When he called his supplier, he got back to me and said that there is no factory navigation system compatible with a 2005 mustang (which we know is not true).

Javier,
Thanks for the photos showing the differences between the 05-07 Nav and the 09 Nav. Does anyone know if there is any functional difference between the 05-07 nav and the '08 nav? From what I can tell there are a couple physical differences. the ***** have a silver trim piece and the mute button on the left hand side is replaced with a phone button. Does this unit have built-in Bluetooth capabilities for your phone? Or did they just change the buttons since SYNC was released in 2008 on some vehicles?

From the information I received from my contact it appears that the new nav does not have an amplifier. Which means it's only giving off line drive to the speakers, and that would explain the low volume and muffled sound.
