Still need moleskin on newer stangs?
Still need moleskin on newer stangs?
Hi guys,
I'm getting the windows tinted on my 07 mustang this weekend, and I was wondering if its still necessary to get felt/moleskin for the scratching issue? I'm guessing I still need it, but I wasn't sure if Ford fixed this with the newer models...
Thanks!!

Better safe then sorry. And I dont think the problem was ever addressed. I just wish I had been a forum member and known about the tint problem before I'd had my tint installed and scratched.
I have an 07... I don't beleive that it's any different than the 05 & 06s, however, I personally haven't had any issues with the tint scratching. I know it's been an ongoing, and well documented, problem... I guess I've been lucky
Most tint installers charge extra to install the Moleskin. Save yourself some $$ and do it yourself. It's in my 'How-To' section.
And for the shops that don't have the Moleskin, do not let them talk you into putting the felt side of Velcro instead. It will eventually fail leaving glue residue all over your tint. I know.

I followed TacoBill's recommendation and instructions and installed the Moleskin on both my '05s. The first door took me about an hour because the rail did not stay on the body when I pulled the door panel up and over. Instead, it stuck to the door panel. I didn't know this had happened and because the rail was out of sight, it wasn't where the instructions said it was supposed to be
. Once I figured it out, the three remaining doors were finished in about 15 minutes each...!
I did find something curiously interesting. According to TacoBill's instructions, the original felt must be removed and all residual glue removed. Well, I didn't have any felt at all (on BOTH cars). No felt, no residual glue, nothing! Anyone else experience this? Now I know why my tint was scratched big time!

All 05-07's do not come with any type of felt on the window wiper channel.
My tint installer originally put a strip of Velcro felt on the wiper channel to prevent any scratches on my newly tinted windows.
What I (and alot of people, especially those that live in hotter climates) discovered was that the glue on the backside of the velcro was actually seperating, thus smearing the exposed adhesive glue on the wiper channel onto the tint.
This is what I was removing and cleaning prior to the Moleskin installation.
Again, sorry for any confusion. Hope this clears things up.
Edit: I added this comment at the end of my 'How-To'.
Thanks for the clarification Bill. Once I removed the wiper channel and examined it, it was very obvious to me that Ford screwed up. That channel is basically hard rubber -- very bad for tint....
I had tint installed on my wife's car this past week and so far so good. I'll be getting my front windows retinted this coming week...

Ford didn't screw up, the setup works fine with glass.
You're right about that. But this makes me wonder why every other make car I've owned has the felt on the inner window wipe......Never had this kind of problem until I bought my '05s. hmmm...

I know as well, tried velrco used its for 3 weeks, and one hot day it moved and glue got all over the drivers side window, pain to get off, save yourself the trouble buy the moleskin and follow TacoBill how to!
think I'm going to do the moleskin anyway, even with no plans for tint... will definitely minimize risk to the glass, as that plastic stuff they have in there cannot get ANY dust IN it, just ON it, against the glass...even alittle padding gives it somewhere to go.
