Problem with Stipes
Problem with Stipes
I had my body shop install my new stripes last February. Yesterday I noticed that one stripe on my hood has peeled back and basically un-attached itself from the metal. I was able to slide it back but now it is bubbled up and I know when I go to wash it I will have the same problem again. Does anyone know if it is possible to re-stick the vinyl onto metal? I got this strip kit from Bob White Graphics and they are supposed to be the high quality 3M brand. I was there when they were installed so I know that everything was done exactly as it was supposed to be done, the shop even baked the car in their paint booth for an hour to make sure everything dried correctly. Also you can see one corner did tear but I think I can maneuver it back in place so it shouldn't show. I am going to have the striped painted on soon so I won't have to worry about this happenning again but for now just looking for a fix.

What he says^ The installer might not have prepped the hood with a 3-M type wax and grease remover. That chemical strips all the old wax off the paint. The hood should be prepped before laying down any stripes.
You'll really like the painted stripes.I had my 06 GT LL stripe painted.

I've done those installs for years and can tell you that tear is something you won't be able to "fix". The bubbles will eventually evaporate with the sun's heat, though. You know how this will go. Stripe manufacturer will blame installer, installer will blame manufacturer. I see two potential causes here. The stripes edges aren't rounded and will lift if they are washed with a hand mitt too soon. How long did you wait to wash it? You should wait at least two days for it to set up properly. Secondly, the surface may not have been prepped properly and the decals will not permanently stick to a waxed surface. It's a tough call who to blame on this one. But, if the paint wasn't properly prepped, i would lay blame on the bodyshop and have it done over. That means the entire job because the rest will start to lift if there is wax beneath it. Sorry, it sucks that it happened. Good luck with it.
