Painted Light Buckets
I did this with my last car. Lots of people did. I used a heat gun and a lot of time to do it but aI do know a few who baked them. The key is to keep your eyes on them and not leave them in too long. As far as resealing them, I used a bead of clear silicone and had no problems. Invisible once installed. Its also a fairly common project among the HOnda crowd.

Hi Chris,
I don't thinkt we are asking for them to give us a set of rejected lights, we are simply asking if they would be willing to sell the lights as a kit as opposed to a complete assembly.
If you can PM me the name of the company I can contact their sales department and see if I can arrange a goup buy. It seems like there are a few of us that are interested in this mod.

The company supplies direct to Ford - so I doubt that anyone could get a group buy. They are an OEM supplier to several other auto manufacturers too.
The contract with Ford (typically) does not allow any third party to purchase the components or complete assemblies. Not without Ford's permission - and unless your name is Roush or Shelby, you may not have much luck.
Since I work in engineering, I can sometimes get some "engineering samples" from a customer if we are bidding on a machine build. But so far, no Mustang parts.

If you'd be willing to donate the other headlight, I'd like to give it a try. Building scale models all my life, I've worked with a lot of plastic and I'd like to give it a try.

Sounds great, Ian. I'll remind you a few days after you get back. Just let me know how much you think s/h will be. Maybe between the two of us, we can get it figured out.
Have fun in Hawaii!

hey for those of you pulling aart your headlights, could one of you do me a favor, while you have them off the car could you measure the diameter of both the headlight and the opening (since it appears to be bigger) where they sit for me? Thanks in advance.
I too have tried this, they are valeo headlights. Now valeo uses this black adhesive that has a very high melting point. The houseing melts before the headlight. I eventually dremeled them apart. I scrapped that project, too much work getting them to stay together. We relly have to wait for some aftermarket replicas are made. Those will com apart easily if they use that grey glue.
Was it hard to dremel them apart? I thought about doing this... but like rrobello I'd like to know the Diameter of the opening of the headlight before I do so. If I do this, I won't be putting the clear lense back on, it would be a round cutoff on the opening with clear silicone.
ren274u, could you let us know since you took them apart already?
Thanks!
By the way, what have you done with the ones that you took apart? have you reused them or got new ones?

I know I'm a bit late posting, but I did an HID retrofit onto my motorcycle and baked the headlights to get them apart - here's my DIY page: F4i Projectors. Scroll to "Opening up the headlights". The F4i lights were very tough to get apart - it's much easier if you have someone helping you. I kept having to put them back in to warm them up as I worked my way around.
Good luck.

Are you referring to these vents? If so, they're fake. If not, nevermind.

Yes, those are the vents, and they are not fake. If you dont' seal them, water can get in through these vents when you are driving and possibly wind up on a hot bulb which could cause the bulb to burst. From what I understand, the light needs to be completely sealed from the elements.

You all have seen what i did to my mustang, and my paint work, and i am a certified painter through PPG. ( I can show picture proof) i wouldnt mind doing these for somebody. and i def wouldnt be charging 800$ either..... prolly around 200$ if any1 thinks that is fair.
All i would need is a week and a paint code.
if someone has a broken assy tht i can experiement with and show yall how i cna get it apart, then i could do themfor yall, but idonthtink itll be a problem,.. i already thaught of doin it to my car. - Roger

Sorry. Those "vents" don't vent anywhere. They are fake.

yes they are fake in the sense that they dont vent into the engine compartment but they are open to the air if you were to remove the front lens and the air that does pass into these vents comes out where the light bulb is so if the light bulb isnt sealed then the issues odiaz mentioned will occur

I stand corrected.
I didn't think about it with the cover off... which is exactly what he was talking about.
I would have to see a completed set with some real good detail pics first, but I'd consider buying a set.
You could even have a core charge to keep the overall cost down. Once you do a set for someone, they could send you their old ones. Sort-of the same way Hatchman is doing the powder coated cam covers.
