have you tried melting just the seams? Maybe using a soldering iron or (if possible) a regular iron?

odiaz. Anyway to take a few close up pics and post them? Maybe someone can come up with something.

Thanks for these instructions, they were very detailed.

The headlight buckets came in yesterday and I put in them in the oven at 210 for 15 minutes. I tried to pry the covers off but they would not budge. I accidentally broke the little tabs on 2 spots. Put the buckets in the oven for another 20 minutes and tried again. No dice. These things won't budge.

Rich, the guy at the car show that did it said he wound up cutting the covers off and then using the covers to make a round lens and glued that infront of the lamp.

I think I would rather take the cover off in one piece and then reseal the buckets after they are painted.

Has anyone else tried this. I'm wandering what kind of success any of you are having.
Thanks for the feedback. Apparently the Honda & Mustang lights are assembled differently. Maybe you could try a razor blade to cut the seal. A heat gun might also work, but these can melt the plastic.

So I tried it again. I figured the last time 210 wasn't enough heat, so I raised it to 245. I baked them for 15 minutes and when I opend the oven door, one of the headlights was melted and the other one was a bit soft. I used 2 flat blade screwdrivers and was able to pry the cover off, but it was still very hard. Be careful, the plastic filler in the light bucket is VERY easily scratched.

Just for the heck of it, I managed to get the melted one pried apart also, although I don't think I will be able to use it at all. That was $170 down the drain.javascript:emoticon('')
smilie Hawgman, if you see them on fleabay for $30, jump on it., but I hope I get it before you

So If we can leearn anything from my mistake, 210 isn't hot enough and 245 is too hot. If you do bake them, check on them often. 15 minutes is enough to melt them.

I'll post pictures when I get a chance.

Here's ONE for $30 (+$10 s/h) if anyone wants to practice.
If it doesn't get any bids, I'll probably buy it so if anyone wants it let me know so I don't bid.

EBAY: 05 Ford Mustang Passenger Head Light

EDIT: I had the price wrong.

Looks like he's been trying to sell the same one for the last few weeks and no one wants it.

Inside the clear cover is a very thin black plastic cover that has the vents in it. This piece has black platic tabs that apear to be glued to the main bucket. With all the heat I applied, the slots the tabs fit into were mostly melted so this piece came out fairly easy.

It is very soft, so it did get scratched by the screwdriver I used to pry the covers open. I sanded these pieces and painted them with primer. I gave it 2 coats of primer with sanding in between each coat.

I figured this will save me some time since I can get these painted and not have to worry about not having any lights while I wait for the rest of the work on the car to be done.

I am seriously thinking about getting a piece of plexiglass and bonding it to the light reflector. This will seal the headlight unit and still leave the fins exposed as Rich did in the first picture at the beginning of this post. Since my light buckets are good, I can try to remove the clear lens at a lower temperature and hopefully not melt it. This way I'll have a set of buckets with the recessed lens and one with the factory lens. Then I can choose which I like better.

I hope someone else tries this and has more success then I did. If you do, please post your technique.

I emailed the guy who was trying to sell just one on eBay. He said he'd take $30 shipped if anyone's interested.

Well, the last attempt at doing my own painted light buckets was a total disaster. The lights melted in the oven while I was trying to remove the clear plastic lens. I was able to paint the plastic filler but I could not salvage the buckets.

Since then, it looks like Roush is finally selling these, but only on factory stage 3 models.

I saw these on Ebay. The guy wants $350 for the pair.

It looks a little suspicious because he only has a feedback rating of 5 and Roush is not acknowledging that these lights exist at all.

Hummm... wonder if he has figured out a way to get the lenses off and paint the buckets. Just happened across another one of his auctions for a "Roush Custom Painted Grill" and in the picture is a headlight bucket without a lens on it

I saw those. Looked like he tied a set of regular headlights to a stock V6 grill with an extention cord ( in my opinion ).

I sent him an email and it seems he has figured out a way to open the light bucket to paint it. It is NOT a Roush light. My biggest concerne would be how well it is resealed. I would hate to have problems later on with condensation.

Still, it looks like a great mod. I'd love to be able to do it myself. I have problems trusting other people's work until I've seen what their capabilities are.

He may have, but if that's the case, it wouldn't fit that Roush fascia very well.

Yep he used a V6 grille... and of course, he has it for sale.
