Painted Light Buckets

I sent him an email and it seems he has figured out a way to open the light bucket to paint it. It is NOT a Roush light. My biggest concerne would be how well it is resealed. I would hate to have problems later on with condensation.
Still, it looks like a great mod. I'd love to be able to do it myself. I have problems trusting other people's work until I've seen what their capabilities are.

Well he did finally respond to my question. Didn't answer on how they are sealed or how he got them open. All he said was:
"They are totaly resealed wont leak or condens !!!I would not sell this mod if it where'nt quality!!!"

1000 dollars is ridiculas. I also thought about the same mod by buying some old buckets off e-bay and having a shop do it. Also thought about doing what CDC did with thiers where they used a Jaguar headlight. I know he needs to recoup the cost but if he brought the price down alot I'd be interested. I mean a 1000 bucks is alot of mods.

I actually talked with CDC and they told me that the headlight used on thier concept was actually for a Jaguar. Its not the same size as the ones we have on our stangs.

I have been to the factory where the Mustang headlights (and tail lights) are manufactured. I know some people at the facility and I will look into how they are sealed...

Why not try to get the parts instead? Then we don't have to worry about unsealing them and then resealing them back. If you can get me a set of those buckets and covers that are still fresh and haven't ever been sealed, I'll take care of the rest.

My thoughts exactly. That was why I put it in quotes and copied and pasted his exact text.

I agree - if I worked there, it might be possible to get a single set for personal use - perhaps a rejected set that was "slightly damaged". However, for legal and ethical reasons - anything beyond that would not be likely.
I sent an email last night to a contact at the plant about the assembly process.

When I got in my wreck a couple weeks ago, the tab "arms" on both of my headlamp assemblies were broken. The headlamp "boxes" themselves were fine. So, I will try to experiment tonight with the broken ones to see if I can figure out how to get the lenses off without hurting them or the headlamp.
That guy selling the headlamp on eBay for $30 said on his auction that one (or more) of the tab arms are broken. You can't use it on your car if one of the arms are broken. So that's why he can't sell it. And the bad thing is it's all one piece. I asked K.C. about this and he said you have to buy the whole assembly... and they are $102 a piece. From K.C. anyway... they are probably more expensive from your dealer.

KC is usually the choice for parts, for the good prices and service, but this time I think Saleen takeoffs have him beat by $50 or so.
I've been wanting to do this for a while too, I wonder if with a Dremel tool we can just cut between the lens and the bucket, none of this oven thing that could potentially melt your whole assembly (as it obviously has happened already).
I thought the lights were a lot more expensive, but if they are only $150, that might just be my very next mod (I like the idea of plexiglass to seal the front instead of the OEM lense)

Honda owners have been doing this for years, and there are a few write-ups on how. Here are the important parts pulled from one of them:
1. Remove the headlight from the car and remove any rubber hoses that may be attached.
2. Preheat oven to 200F. Line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil.
3. Place headlight on cookie sheet and place in oven. Make sure the headlight is not touching any part of the oven or it will melt.
4. Set a timer for 10-13 minutes (it should be safe for 15 minutes, but not longer).
5. Remove the headlight from the oven with pot holders (it will be hot).
6. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry off the cover.
7. Once all the parts are apart, paint what you want.
8. After painting, put the headlight back together as best as you can. Place the headlight back into the oven at 200F for 10-13 minutes.
9. Remove the headlight from the oven and squish the cover onto the bucket to eliminate the air bubbles in the glue. Use oven mitts.
10. Place a small bead of clear silicone caulk all the way around the seal where the factory glue is to help keep moisture out.
11. Put the headlight back into the car.

Lenses off!

Masked and painting:

Back together afterwards (compare to first pic)
Did anyone check out theseRoush Lights, cheap
Not a bad price considering the work in them and the cost of the lights. I think Im going to wait till someone puts the turn signals in there so I can get rid of the ones on the bumper. They do look pretty good though

The other concern is how well the lights are sealed. If not properly sealed, this would cause problems down the line with condensation. It might also cause premature failure of the lights.

How about trying "spot" heating? Instead of heating the whole assembly in the oven, just heat the seam since that's how they seal it. All they do when they seal it is heat up the edges of both pieces (the lense and the bucket) and then press them together real hard.

I don't thinkt we are asking for them to give us a set of rejected lights, we are simply asking if they would be willing to sell the lights as a kit as opposed to a complete assembly.
If you can PM me the name of the company I can contact their sales department and see if I can arrange a goup buy. It seems like there are a few of us that are interested in this mod.
