How to protect polished aluminium?

Anyone can recommend any product wax/sealer to use after polishing on high gloss aluminum cooling tank for example Moroso one? How to protect that nice shining surface against fading and oxidation?

A couple friends with bikes recommended this stuff to me: http://www.everbritecoatings.com/car...&products_id=5

Haven't had a chance to try it out myself yet though

Did you use some special clearcoat?
I heard it is very difficult to cover specially polished to mirror aluminum because of very poor adhesion of car clearcoat to this slick surface. And then you can remove clearcote by simply scratching it with your nail. Additionally after while its going yellow. What is with yours?

Not yet I am planning whole process and looking all alternatives possible even powder coating that with silver-chrome paint. I am going to polish ECU housing soon and first and myself using felt pads with drill. Like this one http://cgi.ebay.com/Aluminum-Metal-P...item1c065f9fcb
I was thinking to chrome those aluminum tanks but here where I live it is impossible - no technology to do it.

I am in the process of polishing my Moroso tanks and covers using some buffing wheels on a 6in bench grinder. I have both tanks pretty well done, but can't seem to get the last bit if finishing lines out of the metal. Here's the kit I bought from Eastwood http://www.eastwood.com/buffing/meta...ffing-kit.html

I also orderd an additional spiral sewn wheel and a buff rake.

Actually got it figured myself after doing a bit more research on how to do the final finishing. And after couple additional hours of polishing, the tanks look like mirrors. I will post up the results in a seperate thread.

Those look great

Did you polish and clearcoat yourself? If so, what did you clear coat with as I have my stock covers sitting in the basement and may try this after my Moroso covers are done.

Max those polished cam covers look awesome ! a local custom chrome shop that has done a lot of polishing/plating for me in the past would not try to chrome or polish the cam covers because they are made of magnesium. I really don't know why.
Here are a couple of photo's of the Moroso tanks in chrome.
I have a bunch of polished engine parts on a 1994 Miata we also own that are not clear or powdercoated.
I just polish them a couple of times a year with mothers billet polish and they still look the same after 15 years.

I dont what the heck they are made up, so magnesium sounds good to me. Your local shop was avoiding work. I hand polished my covers and let me tell you: First, they DO polish, but Second, they take a long time to polish. I spent at least a couple of weeks on these bad boys.

they powdercoat wheels at work, I know the wash/rinse tanks require de-ionized water...several stages of hot wash/hot rinse, they dry quick/spotfree...think they are still warm when they hit the coaters.

I think summit sells DIY powdercoat kits for parts small enough to put in a electric oven...problem with clearcoat, if you get a scratch/chip, it will blister/oxidize under...IMO occasional repolishing bare metal is better for the long haul.

for polish, Nev-r-dull wadding polish is great- but makes a black mess in a hurry does hold a shine longer than other stuff Ive tried...

Topic refresh.
Some days ago spoke with guy who powder coat wheels. He said bring polished tanks to me and I will clear powder coat them for you. He said no chance they will go yellow or faded over time. He does polished wheels this way with great results.

Any one tried that way already?

I would like to know as well.

Thus far, I have polished both my tanks along with the brake cover. And after I get the fuse box cover done, I would definitely be interested in doing something like clear powder coating to protect the finish.
