Fang Trunklid: Fiberglass Prep/paint issue???
Hello,
I had the Fang ducktail trunklid installed about a 1-1/2 weeks ago and yesterday I had it out in the bright sun and noticed what appears to be buff marks throughout the top deck. You can only see these marks at certain angles and in the shade you don't see them at all. I have not dealt with fiberglass before, so I would like some comments from the community here on whether what shows in the photographs is bad or normal for fiberglass. This looks bad to me and I'm wondering if it's bad prep work or bad paint sanding? The shop I had this done is very reputatable, being in business for 30 years at the same location. I have even been told by a car show competator that Jay Leno has had work done here. Any comments would be very helpful, because unless this normal for fiberglass, I think it looks bad. Also, the buff marks move across the lid deck in the sunlight as I move.

I can't help with the questions about the fiberglass prep questions, but from the pics it looks to me like you may be able to get rid of the problem with a little polish and wax process.
I'm sure there are others on here that may have a better suggestion, but I know that Mother's makes a 3-stage car wax kit. Stage 1 is to remove any wax on the car. Stage 2 is a polish that helps to fill in any blemishes in the paint. Stage 3 is the wax that gives you that deep mirror like shine.
It looks like to me that they just did a crappy wax job after the paint and used a buffer to work the wax in.
Either way, I'd probably take it back to the shop and show them what you're seeing. They should be able to give you a reasonable explanation of why it currently looks like poo.

Those are definately buff marks from them using a machine buffer. It is common after a panel or car is painted to have the surface wet sanded to remove any flaws such as dust and orange peel out of the clear coat. Once sanded, a buffing process using a cutting compound is used to remove the sanding marks. All of this is normal, but they obviously did not complete the process. After buffing, they should have used an orbital buffer (different than the one mentioned previously) which uses a random orbital pattern. Using this in combination with a much finer compound or machine glaze should have been done, which would have removed the majority if not all of those heavy swirl marks. This process can still be done, so I would take it back to them and tell them to make it right. Lastly, since your car is black, swirl marks are even more obvious than if it were on a lighter colored car. I used to own and operate a detail shop back in the day and have seen and fixed a lot of these types of issues. Take a look at this page and you will see the various compounds available to prevent and correct this problem. Good luck!
Thanks for the info everybody.
It turned out to be what jcode68 mentioned in his message. Thanks! I took it to them and they buffed it out no problem. For adnlyn, this trunklid came from Fang Performance and it's $1050.
