Chaps, this is sooooo cool!!! Awsome! Both ways, either without the plastic or with.
I need to get mine painted at the body shop.
I just would love to buy some aftermarket lamps which have a plastic cover, so I could get rid of the original plastic monster.
Any ideas? I don't want to start glueing plastic directly on the lamp.
Cheers, Ralph

Hey sorry to anyone that was following this thread for updates. I've been a bit busy here at work and also in my personal life (I got married a couple weeks ago) But I do have both headlights done and installed. I tried to take a couple "in progress" shots while I was doing the second headlight.....but kinda slacked off as I got further along. So I think I only have pictures of the headlight torn apart, then a picture with the inserts for the gills and the headlight lens cut to the right size ready to glue in. After those pictures I didn't take anymore. And I thought I had some of the finished ones on my camera here at work (I was wrong) so I'll have to take some when I get home and update then.

Hi Paint Boy,
Congratulations on your nuptials. Wish you the best of luck and a lifetime of happiness.
I had a couple of questions, how did you separate the light bucket? In the pictures you posted of the cut pieces, it looks like the plastic lens has a curvature to it, how dd you get the lens to curve like that? How did you cut the pieces for the side? I believe you said you used aluminum, is that right? How did you glue them to the bucket, an how did you put everything back?
Sorry for all the questions.
Your car looks awesome!!

No problem about the many questions....
1. I used a heat gun to separate the light bucket. Just got it plenty warm evenly all the way around and took a flat pry stick and just worked my way around....first one took some time (about an hour) I didn't want to break it. The second one I had apart in 10 minutes about.
2. The curve on the lens is actually in the lens from the factory. It just doesn't appear so curved on the car.
3. The pieces for the sides are cut out of 18 gauge sheet metal (I just made templates and curved them to fith the "gill" openings
4. To glue the lens and the side pieces I used a structural glue used in the auto repair industry.
5. After all the little pieces were glued from behind.....I just put the bucket all back together and filled the gap with the same glue.....sanded the finish smooth...and did the body work and paint.

Thanks PaintBoy, it came out great. I may just try this again. The last time I put the lights in the oven to heat them up and I couldn't get the cover off. I kept raising the temperature until I melted the light completely. After that, I felt so bad about wasting $190 on the pair of lights that I did not try it again.

Don't feel too bad, I wasted $150 on 3 GT grilles (plus the cost of some new tools) trying to make my "blank" GT grille.
BTW, it's still sitting on the table in many, many pieces.

Ok.....it's been long enough that I think I can bump this thread myself....Has anyone else tried this modification sucessfully?
I haven't even gotten around to buying a spare headlight for testing yet.

I've been planning on it , but waiting till my Silver Horse Racing flush mount window vents come in. When they do , I'll have my body shop do both the vents and head light buckets. I'm sure I'll be posting pictures when it's done , but that'll probably be in the window vent thread ...
