We've only had one storm here in the past couple of months that produced lighting, and that was at night, most of the storms have been in the daytime...

Very nice man!! Not really seeing the lightning makes for some cool lighting in the clouds. Especially the bottom right corner of your first pic..

that's most likely an internal lens/filter reflection. You'll only see the brightest part of the lighting strike reflected, so all the other branches probably wouldn't be visible. Very cool :-)
you can get a 'lightning trigger' that will sense the bright lightning and trip the shutter. That might take some of the fun/challenge out of it though. It would still be challenging though, as you don't know WHERE it will strike :-)
Awesome shot, thats a almost once in a life time capture. I've never been able to get lightning on my D50, I think mainly because I've only tried doing it hand held while looking through the viewfinder. Next good storm im setting up the tri-pod and using wireless remote.
