I'm looking at adding on an exhaust system for my V6, but i'm worried about it sounding to much like a ricer, i've heard some other V6 mustangs with exhausts on them and didnt like the way they sounded, just sounded alot like a four cylinder, which i do not want. I like the sound of the current V6 exhaust, how it sort of purrs when your cruising, a nice low level rumble. I'm looking for that, but louder. Basically looking for the best way to make it sound more like a V8. I've considered the ford racing exhaust, but i'm not sure. Suggestions?

How do you make a 4 cylinder sound like a 6? How do you make a Civic sound like a lawn mower (um... ok, that can be easily done). As said time and time again, a 6 will never sound like an 8. Never. Period. Can't be done. Nada.
Now then... you can get one mean sounding V6, especially when you go with a cat-back dual system. I dig my jba duals with jba headers. Magnaflows are great. And, MRT's are outstanding. GT take-offs can be found cheap and they sound really nice. Also, an H-pipe will probably get you the lowest rumble. Personally, I feel headers truly open up the exhaust note and give a slight performance boost (a subject up for debate on these boards). Just poke around the forums and look for exhaust clips. See which one your drawn to then get out your credit card.
Here's my setup...not much louder at idle... but, at wot she really opens up.

If you like the sound of the stock v6 consider getting the GT take offs and running an Hpipe.. I think you'd like the sound. Just run a search here on the boards and im sure you can find a clip of it.
Here's a clip of my exhaust just for comparison:
Dual Flow40s w/ Hpipe & short resonators

Car will never sound like an 8. But if you want a good sounding 6, you may want to try dual MRT's and a H pipe. Here is a link to the sound clips for them:

Believe it or not, in my opinion, the best sounding exhaust setup on a 4.0 I've heard were dual GT takeoffs with a H-pipe. The sound is as close to a small block V8 as I've heard. This setup will not break your pocketbook either as you can find the mufflers for less than $50 then all you need is the H-pipe, hangers and a mid pipe. The whole setup for under $200.
But the fact remains - our 4.0 will never ever sound like a true V8.

great way to make your 6 sound like an 8 is to add the jba headers, xpipe with custom magnaflow XL dual mufflers and a c&l intake....
i revved up next to my friend that has an 02 mustang v6 with mac duals...his sounds good at low rpm, but when he revvs up to higher rpm it really sounds like a 6...
the sound that i have is much deeper in the 3000-4000 rpm...
well thats how i went about it...sounds good...ill try to post sound bytes later..

I think my custom dual system is as close as you can get:

I personally like my Dual GT take offs with a custom fabricated H-pipe. The mufflers can be purchased for like 50 dollars and the rest of the fabrication cost about 150. I bought the hangers directly from Ford which cost about another 90 dollars. So in total it came out to about 300 dollars for the full dual exhaust. Without the hangers its 100 dollars cheaper, but I had heard of problems with fabbed up hangers so I just bought the right ones... You can never make a 6 cylinder sound like an 8, so just find an exhaust that sounds good to you, regardless if it sounds like an 8.

Airwolf if you are interested in GT takeoffs, PM me. I have my set coming off my GT this week. It has 650 miles on the car. I like those MRTs, they sound good. My buddy has done the Gttake off route and it does sound nice and healthy.
